The family of Ms. Pham Thi Ngoc Thu (34 years old, living in a house deep in an alley in Ward 13, District 6, Ho Chi Minh City) was moved when the working group visited. Ms. Thu's husband, Mr. Long, passed away due to a work accident while dredging a sidewalk drainage hole on July 26, 2023, in Pham Van Hai Commune, Binh Chanh District.
The inspection delegation of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City visited and burned incense for victims of work accidents.
After the incident, Ms. Thu struggled to raise two small children. Her family has been working as sewer workers for three generations. Life was not very comfortable, but now it became even more difficult without her husband.
Currently, Mr. Long's work accident benefits have been implemented by the employer according to regulations. Ms. Thu was also supported by the company (where Mr. Long worked) to get a job to have financial resources to stabilize her life.
She confided that her son burned incense for his father every day and kept calling out, “Dad, come back to me.” Although the pain has gradually subsided, she is always worried about whether she will have enough strength to provide her children with a proper education in the future.
When she heard that the delegation was coming to visit, Ms. Thu could not help but be moved and expressed her gratitude for the leaders of the authorities' care and support for her family.
The delegation gave gifts and encouraged Ms. Thu's family to overcome the loss and soon stabilize their lives.
Joining the working delegation, Mr. Du Xuan Cuong, Vice Chairman of Ward 13 People's Committee, hopes that Ms. Thu's family will soon overcome the loss, stabilize their lives, and encourage the children to try hard in their studies.
“The ward has grasped this case and supported Ms. Thu’s family. At the same time, we will strengthen coordination with the labor delegation to monitor and inspect, including with businesses and business households that employ workers at high risk of occupational accidents to minimize loss and pain like this,” said Mr. Cuong.
On the same day, the delegation also visited the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Nga (in Binh Thanh Hamlet, Binh Khanh Commune, Can Gio District). Ms. Nga's husband, Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, passed away due to an accident while working at a construction site for a single-family home in Tan Quy Ward, District 7 in September 2023.
Being a poor household in the locality, when her husband passed away, Ms. Nga and her two children were struggling to make a living and stabilize their lives. In the small, desolate house with four unpainted cement walls, Ms. Nga burst into tears when talking about her unfortunate husband.
Mr. Dung (a freelance worker) does not have work accident insurance. The Inspectorate of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City has mobilized the homeowner and related contractors to help the family with 150 million VND.
Ms. Kim Nga burst into tears when talking about her late husband to the visiting delegation.
“I don’t want anything more than to find a stable job with a salary and live with my children. I am also grateful to the leaders who took the trouble to come here to visit and support my family,” Ms. Nga was moved.
The local government said it will help Ms. Nga find a stable job in the near future.
Visiting and encouraging the two families, the Inspectorate of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City supported each family with 4 million VND (including a gift worth 1 million VND and 3 million VND in cash), from the contributions of officers and civil servants of the Inspectorate of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City. Through this, we hope to support the family, hoping that the family will have more faith and determination, and gradually overcome the loss.
The delegation gave gifts to Kim Nga's family.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam, Chief Inspector of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City, said that compared to last year, this year, the number of work accidents in the city has decreased significantly.
“We are determined to handle administrative violations when businesses violate occupational safety and hygiene regulations and will transfer the case file and recommend criminal prosecution if there are signs,” said Mr. Lam, adding: “When a work accident occurs, we will definitely ask the business to resolve and compensate the victim’s family. We will work hard with some businesses to ensure their rights, because for some families, the person who suffered a work accident is the main economic pillar and also has young children.”
The Chief Inspector of the HCM City Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs also said that the visit to encourage families whose relatives died due to work-related accidents aimed to learn more about the current circumstances of the families and provide timely assistance. Through this, each officer and civil servant of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs and local authorities would put themselves in the position of the victim's family to understand and fully promote their responsibility when performing their duties to the people.
