(ABO) After the closure of Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate to prevent salinity, salinity intrusion has now peaked and is gradually decreasing. Therefore, based on the request of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) of Tien Giang province, the Irrigation Investment and Construction Management Board 10 - Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has opened Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate since the morning of May 2.
Operation of opening Nguyen Tan Thanh culvert. |
Previously, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development sent an official dispatch requesting the Irrigation Investment and Construction Management Board 10 to operate the closure of the Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate to prevent salinity from the afternoon of March 1, 2024.
Nguyen Tan Thanh culvert officially opened from the morning of May 2. |
On that basis, the Investment and Construction Management Board of Irrigation 10 closed the Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate to prevent salinity on the afternoon of March 1, 2024. Due to the high and prolonged salinity, the Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate has been closed until now.
Currently, salinity has peaked and is gradually decreasing. According to the assessment of the Southern Institute of Water Resources Research and the Tien Giang Hydrometeorological Station, salinity will increase slightly during the high tide of the 15th day of the 3rd lunar month (April 26 and 27).
After that, salinity continued to decrease towards the river mouth and increased again during the high tide at the end of the third lunar month (May 9 and 10) but at a low level. Salinity of 1 g/l is likely to penetrate from My Tho Cruise Port to Binh Duc ferry and is unlikely to affect the Nguyen Tan Thanh Canal upstream.
Based on the above assessment of saltwater intrusion, to solve the water pollution situation inside Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate due to having to close the saline barrier for a long time, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has requested the Investment and Construction Management Board of Irrigation 10 to operate and open Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate.
Comrade Pham Van Trong inspected the operation of opening Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate. |
On the morning of May 2, the Irrigation Investment and Construction Management Board 10 opened the Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate.
Also on the morning of May 2, Vice Chairman of Tien Giang Provincial People's Committee Pham Van Trong inspected the operation of Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice. During the inspection, comrade Pham Van Trong assessed that the investor and the construction unit had implemented the project to ensure progress, quality and efficiency.
In particular, the project has helped Tien Giang province prevent salinity and store fresh water in a timely manner, helping to protect production and domestic water for people in Tien Giang and Long An provinces. To date, the project's construction progress has reached more than 80% and will be completed in July 2024.
Comrade Pham Van Trong said: “The implementation of the Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate project is very meaningful. Up to now, the effectiveness of the project has been promoted. First of all, it prevents salinity, so the entire area inside the project is not affected by salinity intrusion.
The project has received high consensus from the people and sectors and localities. In the long term, the project will not only solve the problem of salinity prevention but also store fresh water sustainably and fundamentally, not passively like the implementation of temporary steel dams in previous years. Up to this point, the salinity has allowed the operation of opening the sluice gate to take fresh water.
