A representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport said that starting last night (February 7), contractors have fenced off the entire intersection area and surrounding infrastructure, and have now basically completed the conditions for organizing traffic through the area.
Construction barriers at Nguyen Van Linh - Nguyen Huu Tho intersection
Accordingly, from February 8, the entire road section at the intersection will be barricaded 24/7 during the construction of the underpass, expected to last 240 days. The Department of Transport prohibits vehicles from traveling from Nguyen Huu Tho Street to cross Nguyen Van Linh Street at the intersection of Nguyen Van Linh - Nguyen Huu Tho. Vehicles will travel on an alternative route.
To implement the new traffic plan, the Traffic Department (project investor) has started to build new items such as: U-turn roads, additional traffic lights, road painting... and installed many directional signs to guide people.
Specifically, trucks from District 7 to Nha Be district can go along Nguyen Huu Tho street - turn right onto Nguyen Van Linh street (2 car lanes) - turn around at the location before Tu Dinh bridge or before the toll station - Nguyen Van Linh street - turn right onto Nguyen Huu Tho street.
Motorbikes and cars can follow the route Nguyen Huu Tho Street - turn right on Nguyen Van Linh Street (2 mixed lanes) - turn around on the service road under Ong Lon Bridge - Nguyen Van Linh Street - turn right on Nguyen Huu Tho Street.
Previously, the Department of Transport planned to adjust the traffic route according to the new plan from February 3, with a trial run for 4 days. If the traffic situation is stable, the intersection will be barricaded on February 7 (ie the 28th of the Lunar New Year) to officially start construction during the Lunar New Year. However, the units then checked to ensure that all necessary and sufficient conditions were met, so the intersection could be closed from the 29th of the Lunar New Year.
The entire intersection was barricaded.
"The traffic volume through this area is very large, when the intersection is "closed", it will certainly cause disruption, making it more difficult for people to travel and taking more time. However, the tunnel construction is right in the middle of the intersection, so there is no other way. The implementation during Tet is to reduce traffic congestion and give people time to access information about the intersection closure. The construction unit is rushing to work during Tet, speeding up the progress to bring the project to the finish line" - a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport informed.
Started in April 2020, the construction of the Nguyen Van Linh - Nguyen Huu Tho intersection with a total investment of VND 830 billion was expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2023, but the progress has been delayed due to difficulties in site clearance. According to the design, the project will build a central circular island (60m in diameter) and 2 underpasses and branches on Nguyen Van Linh Street. The two underpasses on Nguyen Van Linh Street will go underground through the Nguyen Van Linh - Nguyen Huu Tho intersection area, about 480m long (including the access roads at both ends of the tunnel and the closed tunnel).
