The land of Chi Lang (Lang Son) has long been in the subconscious of the Vietnamese people, a place with a long-standing historical tradition, with a particularly important position as the "throat" of the country in stopping the invasions from the North, contributing to the glorious feats of national history... Promoting the strengths of the region, in recent times, Chi Lang district has focused on building and developing tourism associated with historical relics and cultural heritage.

Advantage with many historical sites

Chi Lang is a mountainous district located in the southwest of Lang Son province, home to many ethnic groups, including the Nung (50.8%), Tay (34.9%), Kinh (12.8%) and other ethnic groups (Dao, Hoa, Muong, Cao Lan, San Chi, Ngai) accounting for about 1.5%. Currently, the district has 112 relic sites including: 56 revolutionary historical relics; 10 scenic relics; 6 archaeological relics; 40 religious and belief relics.

Of which, there are 3 national-level relics (including 2 relics (Lang Nac Cave and Wind Cave) and 1 Chi Lang Historical Relic Site); 5 provincial-level relics include: Na Ngum Cave (Bang Huu Commune), Bo Nam Cave (Bang Huu Commune), Yen Ma Hill (Quang Lang Commune), Phai Sa Site (Hoa Binh Commune), Cao Duc Thanh Ca Temple (Chi Lang Town). These relics are mostly located in the Chi Lang historical relic complex, these are relic sites with great potential for tourism development.

With the efforts of relevant levels, sectors and people, tourism in Chi Lang district has improved a lot, the number of visitors to the district has increased gradually over the years. In 2022, the whole district attracted 120,000 tourists, 4 times higher than in 2021, in the first 6 months of 2023, it attracted over 100,000 visitors, exceeding 80% of the annual plan, equal to 83% compared to the whole year of 2022, but not commensurate with the potential of the district.

Mr. Vi Quang Trung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Chi Lang district, said: Currently, Chi Lang district focuses on directing agencies, units, departments, and organizations in the area to promote the exploitation of historical relics and cultural heritage values associated with tourism development. Since 2022, the district has focused on exploiting two main tourist routes.

Tour route No. 1, Historical, cultural and spiritual tourism, including: Chau Nam Temple (Chi Lang town) - Chi Lang Victory Exhibition House - Quy Mon Temple (Chi Lang commune) - Chau Bat Temple, Co Chin Temple (Dong Mo town) - Chau Muoi Temple (Hoa Binh commune); Tour route No. 2: Historical, cultural and experiential agricultural ecological tourism: Chi Lang Victory Exhibition House - Luy Ai - Quy Mon Temple - Chi Lang Pass - Devil's Face Mountain - areas growing safe agricultural products such as Custard Apple, Grapefruit (Chi Lang commune and Dong Mo town)...

“Currently, Chi Lang district is coordinating and collaborating with the Lang Son Geopark Management Board to build tourist route number 3, including the districts: Bac Son - Van Quan - Chi Lang - Lang Son city,” Mr. Trung added.

Although there are many historical sites, which are great potential for developing tourism associated with the historical sites of the region, however, according to Ms. Dinh Thi Thao, Head of the District Department of Culture and Information, local tourism activities are not commensurate with the potential, still spontaneous, current tourism products are mostly exploited individually, passively, and have not yet formed attractive and branded tours and tourist routes.

The number of visitors to the relic sites is still very small, only concentrated in a few days of festivals such as: Tran Temple Festival in Nhan Ly Commune (January 6); Mo Village Communal House Festival (January 7), Dong Mo Town Festival (January 10), Chau Muoi Temple Festival (Mo Ba, Hoa Binh Commune - January 11), Trung Village Pagoda Festival (March 15 of the Lunar calendar); Hang Vi Festival in Chien Thang Commune (January 20)...

Make tourism a key economic sector

In order to strive to make tourism an important economic sector of the district, Mr. Vi Quang Trung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Chi Lang district, said: Party committees, authorities at all levels and related units in Chi Lang district have focused resources, implemented many synchronous solutions, focused on forming unique, characteristic, branded and highly competitive tourism products, creating highlights to attract tourists.

At the same time, the locality also focuses on preserving and promoting the value of Chi Lang Historical Site - a special national relic, in traditional education, research and study associated with local tourism development.

Chi Lang district strives to welcome about 8,200 international visitors and more than 194,000 domestic visitors by 2025, with total revenue from tourists reaching about 172 billion VND.

With diverse tourism potential, different in both nature and culture, especially the values of national historical relics and cultural identities of ethnic groups, along with the efforts of the government and people in the district, historical relic tourism in Chi Lang will create great attraction for tourists and truly become a new direction of economic development of the locality.
