Users will be able to use the new audio feature to customize the voice of the Meta AI digital assistant, the source said. The list includes five celebrity voices, including Judi Dench, Kristen Bell, John Cena, Awkwafina, and Keegan-Michael Key, as well as a number of other generic voice options.

Meta will announce the audio feature at its annual Connect conference, which starts on September 25, the person said.

Meta is also expected to debut an early version of its augmented reality glasses at Connect this year and discuss a roadmap for other hardware devices like the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, the company’s first product that featured an audio version of its Meta AI chatbot last year.

The celebrity voices will begin rolling out in the US and other English-speaking markets this week across Meta's apps, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, the source said.

Earlier this summer, Bloomberg reported that Meta was in talks with celebrities about using their voices for AI projects.

Last week, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted a promotional video featuring John Cena on Instagram, which shows the two men and several others performing stunts while wearing Ray-Ban Meta glasses.

Meta has been racing to launch AI products for its billions of users in competition with ChatGPT maker OpenAI and Alphabet's Google.

In May, OpenAI introduced a similar audio feature for its chatbot but quickly ran into trouble when actress Scarlett Johansson accused the company of making the voice sound "uncannily like her" even though she refused to let the company borrow her voice for the project.
