The 'golden' boy of the Chemistry Olympiad is determined to become a good doctor

Nguyen Huu Tien Hung, the owner of the Gold Medal of the 2024 International Chemistry Olympiad. Sharing about his future plans, Tien Hung said he is trying to study well at Hanoi Medical University to fulfill his dream of becoming a good doctor to cure and save people.

Fate with Chemistry

The 56th International Chemistry Olympiad will be held from July 21 to July 30, 2024 in Saudi Arabia, with the participation of delegations from 89 countries and territories. A total of 327 contestants will compete.

The Vietnamese national team had 4 students competing and participating for 10 days. All 4 students won medals, including: 3 Gold Medals, 1 Silver Medal.

With a score of 77.35/100, Nguyen Huu Tien Hung, a male student from Bac Ninh province - not only won the Gold medal but also ranked 17th out of more than 300 excellent candidates worldwide participating in the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). This is also the highest score achieved by the Vietnamese team in the 2024 IChO season.

Hung's achievements contributed significantly to helping the national team rise to second place, equal with the US and just behind China.

The “golden boy” of the Chemistry Olympiad said: Since childhood, I have had a special passion for natural sciences and dreamed of growing up to become a good doctor to cure people. But to get the results I have today, my journey to chemistry is a long story.

According to Hung, in grades 6 and 7, he tried hard to study English well so that at the end of the year he could take part in the provincial excellent student exam. Since grade 8, he dreamed of becoming a doctor, so he changed his direction to study biology and chemistry very well. His passion came from a simple reaction like blowing into a solution to precipitate, blowing more will lead to dissolving the precipitate.

In grade 9, her passion for chemistry was “ignited” by her sister and her friend, who were also former students of Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted. “They advised and shared a lot about how to study chemistry, its applications in life, from the most basic...”, Tien Hung said.

By grade 10, Tien Hung clearly outlined the time to review knowledge after a certain period of time while learning new knowledge in parallel.

“I am very passionate about Chemistry because this subject allows me to experience the appeal of chemical reactions, creating colorful colors, precipitation, evaporation, etc. When studying this subject, I can easily explain things, phenomena, research the composition, structure, properties and changes of matter. It is very close to everyone's life. In particular, this is a subject with many applications in life,” Hung shared.

According to Tien Hung: When studying Chemistry, I often watch videos about chemical reactions online. This is a way to both entertain and help me think and understand the difference between knowledge and reality.

Although he only studied chemistry in his final year of secondary school, Hung still won first prize in the provincial excellent student competition and was admitted directly to Bac Ninh Specialized High School. Here, Hung continued to win many awards in competitions such as: Second prize in the National High School Excellent Student Competition in Chemistry, Gold Medal in the Asian Chemistry Olympiad in grade 11. And especially the first prize in the National High School Excellent Student Competition in Chemistry in grade 12 is the premise for Tien Hung to have the opportunity to be listed on the international gold medal list at the International Chemistry Olympiad 2024.

Achieving impressive results at the International Chemistry Olympiad, the male student from Bac Ninh province modestly said: In addition to his own constant efforts, Hung was strongly inspired by many teachers of Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted, especially the teachers of the Chemistry department. Being enthusiastically guided by teachers is the motivation for Hung to strive to improve himself.

“A great encouragement for me is that my family always cares for me, accompanies me and creates all conditions. My family has encouraged and prioritized me a lot and always encouraged me to continue pursuing my studies,” the student said emotionally.

With his outstanding achievements, the Party Cell of Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted held a ceremony to admit outstanding student Nguyen Huu Tien Hung to the Party. It is an honor to be in the ranks of the Party. Tien Hung shared: Becoming a Party member before entering university is a special mark for me. I feel like I am more mature and responsible in every thought and action.

Determined to become a good doctor

Talented as he is, Hung does not have any specific study tips. From a young age, the young man has trained himself to be self-disciplined in his studies. He shows great willpower and determination in every subject.

Hung said that to study Chemistry well, one must first learn the basic concepts of the subject thoroughly because they are the foundation for developing more complex concepts. In addition, one must pay attention to the lectures in class and ask the teacher immediately if one does not understand or has any questions.

If possible, you should improve your English knowledge to read and understand foreign documents. Before each exam, you need to prepare your health well, both physically and mentally, because only when you have a good mentality can you complete your exams to the best of your ability.

Sharing about his future after conquering the peak of the International Chemistry Olympiad, Nguyen Huu Tien Hung said he is studying Medicine at Hanoi Medical University. This is the school that Hung has dreamed of since he was a child, and his family has also oriented and supported him.

According to Hung, his dream is to become a general practitioner to treat and save people. “I really like watching short videos about how to treat diseases and how the human body works. The human body is interesting because we are a complex machine, a masterpiece of nature. The more I learn, the more interested I am, even though I know that studying to become a doctor requires many years, a lot of effort, and countless difficulties. But my parents are always by my side, supporting me in pursuing my dream of becoming a doctor...”, Tien Hung said.

Currently, Hung is a freshman at Hanoi Medical University, majoring in Medicine. Here, in addition to class hours, Tien Hung also actively participates in school union activities, participating in the school's academic clubs to enrich his knowledge.

After only a few short months of studying at the new school, Hung found Hanoi Medical University to be an ideal environment to cultivate knowledge about his major and hone skills to prepare for his future career.

“My goal during my studies here is to acquire a lot of medical knowledge, participate in scientific research and most importantly, become a good doctor to save many people,” Hung confided.
