Indonesian player admits wanting to hit Doan Van Hau

VnExpressVnExpress09/11/2023

Indonesian player Dendy Sulistyawan publicly admitted that he wanted to beat Doan Van Hau in the match against Vietnam in the first leg of the AFF Cup 2022 semi-final.

Dendy Sulistyawan recounted the incident in a talk show broadcast on Youtube on November 8. He and Van Hau both started the match at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on January 6, 2023, after which the Vietnamese defender made a foul on the ball, making Dendy angry.

"At that time, I was angry and really wanted to hit him," the Indonesian striker recalled. "Because it was a two-legged tackle, he deserved to be hit."

However, Dendy told himself that if he reacted wrongly, he would receive a red card and put Indonesia at a disadvantage, possibly losing to Vietnam at home. Therefore, the incident only stopped at the two sides pushing each other. In the end, the two teams drew 0-0 before Vietnam won 2-0 in the second leg on January 9, 2023.

At home at My Dinh Stadium, Van Hau continued to be the focus of collisions, including a situation with right-back Asnawi Mangkualam that led to both receiving yellow cards. After that, the situation where naturalized midfielder Marc Klok played a dirty trick and fell down to play a fake football without Van Hau's involvement also created a fever on social networks.

Before Dendy, defender Sandy Walsh also surprised in an interview video. When asked which player he wanted to elbow most, Walsh affirmed that it was Van Hau.

The defender born in 1999 has been disliked by Indonesian players and fans since the final match of the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines. When the score was 0-0, Van Hau fouled Evan Dimas - considered the conductor of U22 Indonesia - which led to this player having to leave the field and return in a wheelchair. Van Hau then scored a double to help Vietnam win 3-0 to win the first SEA Games gold medal.

Vietnam and Indonesia will continue to be in the same group in the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup and the 2023 Asian Cup. However, the opportunity for Indonesian players to face Van Hau is left open because the Vietnamese defender is suffering from an Achilles injury. After marrying his girlfriend Doan Hai My on November 11, Van Hau will go to Singapore for treatment and will need three to six months to recover.
