CATL launches 15-year battery for electric buses

Chinese battery giant CATL has launched its Tectrans Bus Edition battery with exceptional longevity, saying it is the right solution for the electric bus industry.

CATL said the Tectrans Bus Edition battery line has a lifespan of up to 15 years or 1.5 million km and is warranted for 10 years or 1 million km. In particular, this type of battery has an energy density of up to 175 Wh/kg, the highest in the electric bus industry.

The battery will soon be mass produced and will be used in 80 vehicle models. These models belong to 13 automakers, including major automakers such as Yutong Bus, Golden Dragon and Dongfeng Motor.

According to South Korean market research firm SNE Research, CATL is the world's largest battery maker, accounting for 37.6% of the global market share in the first seven months of 2024. In China, the battery maker accounts for 46.2% of the market share.

After dominating the passenger car battery market, the battery maker has ramped up its efforts into the commercial vehicle battery market.

In July 2024, CATL launched the Tectrans commercial vehicle battery brand and two L-series commercial vehicle batteries for the logistics and distribution industry.

The two batteries include a fast-charging version that can charge up to 60% in just 12 minutes, as well as a long-range version.
