According to Nippon , a pair of premium Yubari melons fetched 3.5 million yen (about 25,000 USD or more than 590 million VND) at an auction in Hokkaido, Japan on May 25. This is the second highest price recorded after 5 million yen in 2019.
This pair of melons were among 262 Yubari melons put up for auction at the Sapporo Central Market, an event that heralds the arrival of summer in Hokkaido.

The successful bidder for this year’s pair of melons was Hokuyupack Co., a Yubari-based fruit and vegetable packing company that plans to serve free melons to 200 local residents next month. Specifically, Hokuyupack will provide free melons purchased at a local farmers market on June 3 and 4.
The peak melon harvest season is from late June to the end of July. The Yubari Agricultural Cooperative aims to export 3,258 tons of Yubari melons this season and earn about 1.9 billion yen in revenue.
Premium fruit often fetches very high prices at early season auctions in Japan, with buyers mainly looking to promote their image.
Previously, at the auction in May 2020, when COVID-19 spread, a pair of Yubari melons was only priced at 120,000 yen. However, the price increased to 2.7 million yen in 2021 and 3 million yen in 2022.
