The patient is male, born in 1977, residing in Trung Minh ward, Hoa Binh city. There are 2 people in the family, the patient and his wife. The patient himself is in good health, has not traveled abroad, and has not worked far away. However, in daily life, the patient's eating habits include eating raw fish and vegetables, and the family has raised dogs for many years. 20 years ago, when the patient went to the forest, he often drank water from streams and creeks.
In October 2023, the patient had symptoms of itching on the left knee, right thigh, back, scratching and bumps on the skin. On October 19, 2023, the patient applied Tomax, after 2-3 hours of application, the patient had swelling and itching from the thigh to the groin.
On October 20, 2023, the patient went to Hoa Binh Clinic for examination and was diagnosed with atopic dermatitis. The patient used topical medication and felt the itching reduced and the scratches from scratching healed and formed scabs.
The patient itched and picked at the scales on his left knee and saw a white string. The patient pulled out the worm 10-15cm, the patient thought it was a tendon so he used scissors to cut it off and threw it in the trash.
On the same day, the patient went to Hoa Binh General Hospital for examination and was then referred to Medlatec Hoa Binh Service Testing Center, where the results showed that the patient was infected with cat and dog tapeworm. The patient returned to Hoa Binh General Hospital and was referred to Dang Van Ngu Hospital (Hanoi).
On October 21, 2023, the patient searched online and found out that he suspected he was infected with dragon worms, so he went to Dang Van Ngu Hospital for examination and was diagnosed with dragon worms. Here, the patient was advised about dragon worms and scheduled for a follow-up examination on November 20, 2023.
At the time of investigation and monitoring, the patient was conscious, able to eat and drink, not itchy, and had no new scratches. After examination, the old lesion had become scarred and bruised. When palpating the lesion, there were no signs of parasites living under the skin.
After discovering the case, measures were implemented such as: consulting and instructing on how to remove worms from the body at the swollen lesions; cleaning the lesions where the worms were removed; handing over to the Hoa Binh City Medical Center and the ward health station to continue monitoring and supporting the patient; educating the patient's family about the causes, symptoms, and ways to prevent dragon worm disease.
