With their efforts and burning desire, Phan Linh Lan (a student at Concordia International School, Hanoi) was admitted to Harvard University, and Phi Ngoc Lam Uyen (a student at Olympia Inter-level School, Hanoi) was admitted to Dartmouth University (a top university in the US) with a scholarship worth 8.5 billion VND. The journey of these two female students to the world has become a source of inspiration for many young people.
Multilingual talent and love of history
At the age of 18, Phan Linh Lan enrolled in Harvard University – the dream school of millions of students worldwide. What is special is that Linh Lan not only possesses an excellent academic record with near-perfect grades and certificates, a series of international awards and the ability to speak English, Spanish, French, and Chinese fluently.
Linh Lan has had the goal of studying abroad in the US since 6th grade, and she is especially interested in Harvard University. Because she has this goal early, Linh Lan always tries, makes efforts, and develops herself to be able to meet the requirements of the top school in the US. Linh Lan is interested in history, politics, and cultural activities. The main topic of Lan's essay also talks about her desire to learn and understand more about Vietnamese history in the context of the country's growing development and integration, thereby finding ways to preserve the national culture. This is also the reason why the female student has studied the zither for many years, in addition to the piano and violin.

Linh Lan’s passion for history helped her conquer the rigorous essay of Harvard University. For Linh Lan, history is not only stories about the past but also the key to better understanding people and the world today. Linh Lan’s passion for history and culture is also shown through many activities, such as participating in the Social Science Research class, doing many historical and political researches, and most recently, the project for the school’s National History Day contest.
Linh Lan is also known as a very active student when participating in many extracurricular activities. She is an active member of DECA International - a non-profit organization with many activities for students. Since the beginning of 2023, she has held the position of president of DECA Vietnam. In addition, Linh Lan also won 2 first prizes in grades 9 and 10 at AI-JAM US - a science and technology innovation competition held annually in Silicon Valley, USA. Linh Lan and her friends participated in the topic of conserving endangered bird species in Vietnam by using AI technology to detect animal sounds; preventing traffic accidents by using AI to detect road errors.
The "difference" and passion for scientific research
No less impressive is the story of Phi Ngoc Lam Uyen, a female student at Olympia Inter-level School, Hanoi, who just won a scholarship worth 8.5 billion VND from Dartmouth University - one of the top schools in the US.
Talking about the reason for being accepted to Dartmouth, Lam Uyen said that what makes her different from other candidates is her interest in adventure sports such as scuba diving and archery. In the history of admissions, Dartmouth University really likes candidates with an adventurous spirit to integrate into the school culture.

Uyen included the story of her hobby of diving in her essay. Starting from a somewhat introverted girl, how her worldview changed when she sank into the ocean and saw two worlds: one on land and one underwater. The female student's thoughts about the two worlds, about the journey of inner discovery and self-development starting from diving underwater and going ashore, bravely removing her shell and opening herself up to accept differences.
Uyen's essay also shares her passion for writing. Currently, Uyen has many manuscripts of fantasy novels in English and plans to develop them into complete works. The creative writing workshop project Writing Through (initiated by American writer Sue) that Uyen organized for nearly 100 high school students in the North is also a highlight in her profile.
In addition, Lam Uyen is also known for her passion for scientific research. She is the co-author of a Q2 publication studying the effects of fertilizers on the chemical composition of basil essential oil. In addition, in grade 10, Lam Uyen won 2 international science and technology gold medals, notably the research on the application of 3D printing methods in the production of chips simulating human physiological organs for use in medical laboratories and teaching. This project of Uyen surpassed more than 600 candidates to win the gold prize in Silicon Valley, USA.
Uyen’s career path is in biochemistry. She is also particularly interested in studying human psychology from a brain science perspective. Therefore, her goal at Dartmouth is to further her studies in psychology.
