Scientists propose new way to measure time

DNVN - A research team from Russia's Don State Technical University (DSTU), in collaboration with international scientists, has developed the concept of "local time" to describe the flow of time in different physical systems.

The results of this study were published in the journal Foundations.

Associate Professor Nadezhda Krasiy, from the Department of Advanced Mathematics at DSTU, believes that the nature of time cannot be defined, but can only be felt and measured through its movement.

The study authors suggest that the concept of time first emerged about three million years ago, when human ancestors observed the constant change between day and night. Later, ancient hominins discovered the cycles of the Moon and related natural phenomena, leading to the first prehistoric people measuring the number of days between two full moons, creating an early unit of time.

According to the theory proposed by scientists, time operates as an independent flow, changing according to separate laws and moving along trajectories governed by those laws. This suggests that the flow of time can speed up, slow down or change depending on the circumstances.

“The fact is that any process studied over a certain period of time is a combination of the directly studied process and the accompanying timeline. Moreover, the concept of time in this process does not coincide with astronomical time and depends only on the progress and changes occurring during this process,” Nadezhda Krasiy shared.

The project aims to connect the abstract concept of time to concrete physical processes. To achieve this, experts use mathematical tools to determine “local time” through simple geometric objects, and then compare mathematical models with human experience of measuring time in life.

In the research, the team applied many mathematical methods such as curve geometry, Riemann geometry, differential equation theory, probability theory and random variables.

Experiments have shown that in some mathematical models, the quantitative concept of “local time” can reflect the order of events. This concept is based on ordinal measurements of different quantities, made at the same time.

Thanks to this, the mathematical definition of “local time” that the researchers proposed not only helps to describe the characteristics of observed phenomena but also helps to predict their development.

The research was conducted by scientists from DSTU and the Universidad Nova de Lisboa, Portugal.
