According to Tuoi Tre Online readers, female students at Van Lang University (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) dress revealingly, with exposed chests, exposed navels, and in some cases, wear shorts to school.
Some students, both male and female, also show off tattoos, pierced navels, nostrils, ears...
"Students compete to dye their hair yellow, red, blue, and even white like in a swordplay movie. Is it possible that the school has no dress code, so many students dress in a very offensive way to school?", a reader was indignant.
Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online on the morning of March 11, Mr. Vo Van Tuan - Vice Principal of Van Lang University - said that it is true that there are a few cases of students dressing indecently, but not all.
According to Mr. Tuan, in 2022, the school will issue school regulations. Regarding dress, the regulations require students to come to school to dress seriously, neatly, civilly, politely, discreetly, and in accordance with the good customs and traditions of the educational environment.
When studying physical education, national defense, practicing sports, and participating in extracurricular activities, students must wear uniforms according to the regulations of the organizing unit.
"At school, there are some specific majors such as fashion design. Some students in this major may want to show off so they may dress excessively and inappropriately," said Mr. Tuan.
According to Mr. Tuan, the Youth Union of each class will remind students who dress too revealingly when going to school. Students who violate the rules may not be allowed into the classroom by the lecturer. Students who dress too revealingly will not be allowed into the faculty office. The school elevator also posts regulations on dress code when coming to school to remind students.
Student Community Responsibility
Van Lang University has a dress code when coming to school. Students who violate the rules will be warned and not allowed into class or faculty offices.
Mr. Tuan said that the school does not interfere with how students dress outside of school, but does educate them about community responsibility, attitude, and behavior. These are necessary life skills for current students and future workers.
"Students are adults and are responsible for their own behavior. How they dress outside of school is the freedom of each student. However, the school incorporates life skills activities about students' attitudes and behavioral responsibilities into its activities.
Student role models are also provided to guide life skills for students to follow. Understanding and being conscious of how to dress appropriately for the situation is also a skill, a responsibility.
"Dressing revealingly and offensively is an irresponsible act towards the community. After graduation, appropriate clothing is also a way to create goodwill and increase the chance of being hired by employers," said Mr. Tuan.
