N MANY PROBLEMS NEED SOLUTIONS
In a country where the love of football unites all social classes, the dream of Vietnam becoming a "football power" in the near future is not wrong. However, to enter the continent, to be on par with Japan, Korea, Iran..., Vietnam must certainly make every effort and operate in a synchronous manner. This is beyond the capacity of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF).
Vietnamese football, from its success today, must chart a course for future success.
Even the case of calling up naturalized players to the national team through the case of Rafaelson - Nguyen Xuan Son, in addition to legal procedures, we have to go through the challenge of the tradition of national identity in Vietnamese culture. Nguyen Xuan Son has proven his worth, helping to improve the strength of the national team. This is the basis for us to be more open to other cases such as Hendrio Araujo (Nam Dinh team) or Jason Quang Vinh (Hanoi Police team). However, we cannot abuse this because of achievements, it will lead to imbalance, leaving a big gap in youth training.
Hendrio wants to become a Vietnamese citizen
In the near future, the Vietnamese team will enter the Asian Cup qualifying campaign (from March 2025 to March 2026). Compared to the Laos and Nepal teams, the Malaysian team is the main competitor competing for the top spot in the group with Vietnam. Malaysia with its strong "Westernized" version will be a significant challenge for Mr. Kim Sang-sik and his team, because it is likely that we will only compete with a "pure Vietnamese version" because Nguyen Xuan Son will have difficulty recovering in time after his injury. The personnel problem for the tournament will be the immediate problem that Mr. Kim will have to solve. The problem for the long-term development journey will be the problem that we, the Vietnamese people, need to solve.
NEED STABLE CASH FLOW
Carefully analyzing all aspects, Vietnamese football is still "unstable" in many points and what to do to balance it. The Vietnamese team needs naturalized players because we are weak in youth training. Hanoi, HAGL, SLNA have done well in this but that still does not ensure the continuity of the next generation of resources. Instead of spending tens of billions of dong on transfers and bonuses, the owners should share the responsibility of selecting, training, helping young players gain experience. Just be patient for a few years, we will produce a new generation of players to help expand the selection range for the national team levels. Unfortunately, in the V-League, many clubs are not serious about the VFF's requirement to build a training system for U.15, U.17, U.19, U.21. If the VFF controls this issue well, Vietnamese football will have significant resources from "homegrown".
Overseas Vietnamese players are also worth considering. Don't forget that Dang Van Lam and Nguyen Filip have proven their effectiveness when playing for the national team. Fortunately, coach Kim Sang-sik has the right approach when considering the national team as a place where the best players gather. With that mindset, the Korean coach has a positive impact on the entire career because players of all ages and backgrounds are motivated to strive for opportunities to play for the national team.
However, Mr. Kim cannot accompany Vietnamese football forever. Vietnamese football itself must recognize the core weaknesses to adjust and overcome them. The facilities for competition in Vietnam have not reached the perfect standard. For many years, the financial resources invested in Vietnamese football have always been unstable. That is the reason why many football teams owe salaries and have to disband. Besides Mr. Hien, Mr. Duc, Mr. Thuy, the clubs and localities have not yet mobilized more "shark" investors! Professional football without money cannot do anything. All the problems about youth training, facilities, vision... will be quickly resolved if there is a stable flow of money into football.
Winning the AFF Cup 2024 once again gives us hope. But Vietnamese football at this time still has to look straight at its weaknesses, gradually overcome them before dreaming too far. To take off, we need a runway that is strong and wide enough!
Vietnamese football is also leaving room for exporting players. Vietnamese players who go abroad and then return "empty-handed" have caused public opinion to have a one-sided view through the cases of Cong Phuong, Quang Hai, Van Hau... In fact, when daring to step out of their comfort zone to test themselves, players deserve to be recognized for their professional attitude rather than criticized by public opinion. Like Le Cong Vinh before, when he went to Leixeos (Portugal), although he did not achieve success, he gained many valuable lessons about cultural adaptation, self-awareness, discipline... in the modern football environment. Therefore, clubs need to boldly promote, advertise, cooperate internationally, and equip Vietnamese players with the necessary luggage to go abroad to seek opportunities.
