Hanoi The Vietnamese women's volleyball team won four out of 11 categories at the Victory Cup Gala on the evening of January 16.

The Vietnamese women's volleyball team won the "Team of the Year" award, beating the women's soccer team and the women's 3x3 basketball team. Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and striker Tran Thi Thanh Thuy also won the "Coach of the Year", "Female Athlete of the Year" and "Most Favorite Athlete" awards, respectively.

This is a well-deserved achievement after a successful year for women's volleyball in 2023. The team won the AVC Challenger Cup and the Asian Women's Club Championship for the first time under the name Sport Center I, from which they participated in the FIVB Challenger Cup and the World Women's Club Championship. In addition, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his team also won the silver medal at the 32nd SEA Games, placing fourth for the first time at the Asian Games and the Asian Championship.

In the team's success, main striker Tran Thi Thanh Thuy made the strongest impression in both defense and attack. What she did helped the athlete born in 1997 surpass track star Nguyen Thi Oanh and badminton player Nguyen Thuy Linh. However, Thanh Thuy cannot return to Hanoi to receive the award tonight, because she is busy competing in Japan for PFC Bluecats.

Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet won the "Coach of the Year" category after surpassing two other strong candidates, Sepak Takraw coach Tran Thi Vui and women's karate team coach Nguyen Hoang Ngan. He said this was a memorable milestone in his career for both himself and his students. "It motivates us to move forward to achieve more success," said the coach born in 1976.

Meanwhile, shooter Pham Quang Huy was named "Male Athlete of the Year", surpassing swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang and gymnast Nguyen Van Khanh Phong, to complete the double after winning the title of National Outstanding Athlete. In 2023, the 1996-born shooter made his mark with a gold medal in the 10m air pistol at the 19th Asian Games - the first gold medal for Vietnamese shooting at the Asian Games. In addition, he also won two bronze medals in the men's 10m air pistol team at the 19th Asian Games and the 2023 Asian Championship.

In 2024, Quang Huy continued to reap success when he and Trinh Thu Vinh won the gold medal in the 10m mixed team air pistol at the Asian Championship. The 28-year-old shooter is still working hard to win a place at the 2024 Paris Olympics. "I like the saying 'A bullet is only fired when pressure is increased on the trigger, so when pressure comes, great things are about to happen to you'," Quang Huy said when receiving the Victory Cup.

National shooting team coach Park Chung-gun was named "Best Foreign Expert", surpassing British coach David Grice of the women's 3x3 basketball team who won a gold medal and Chinese expert Yu Guozhi who won a gold medal in mixed doubles table tennis at the 32nd SEA Games.

In five other categories, the four-person women's sepak takraw team was honored as "Team of the Year" after winning three world gold medals, the Asian championship and the 19th Asian Games. 19-year-old athlete Tran Thi Ngoc Yen is the core of this team's playing style, so she was elected "Young Athlete of the Year", surpassing golfer Le Khanh Hung and runner Tran Thi Nhi Yen.

"Disabled Athlete of the Year" went to athlete Le Van Cong. The Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Associate Professor, Dr. Le Buu - former Director General of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training (now the Department of Sports and Physical Training). The most impressive sports moment of the year went to the Vietnamese women's team with the moment the Vietnamese National Anthem was played at the Women's World Cup.

The Victory Cup is an annual award to honor talents who have made outstanding contributions and brought glory to Vietnamese sports. The award is recognized by the General Department of Sports and Physical Training (now the Department of Sports and Physical Training) under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The award is voted on the website of the organizing committee, with a council consisting of leaders, experts and prestigious sports journalists in the field of journalism - media, coaches, athletes, sports managers working or retired in Vietnam.

This is the seventh year the Victory Cup has been held.
