Four 10th grade students in Thanh Hoa, Da Nang and two national universities won first prizes in Informatics, Literature and Geography in the national excellent student exam.
According to the results announced by the Ministry of Education and Training on the evening of January 25, more than 3,350 out of 5,800 candidates won national excellent student awards this year.
The number of 10th graders who won prizes was 42, accounting for about 1% of the total prizes. Of the more than 130 students who won first prizes nationwide, four are in 10th grade.
They are Nguyen Phu Nhan, Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted, Da Nang and Nguyen Huu Tuan, High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences, Hanoi National University, won first prize in Information Technology. Hoang Bao Chau, Lam Son High School for the Gifted, Thanh Hoa won first prize in Geography; and Nguyen Hong Anh, High School for the Gifted, Ho Chi Minh City National University, won first prize in Literature.

According to regulations, the national excellent student exam is for high school students (grades 10-12). However, not many provinces and cities have grade 10 students participating. Last year, out of nearly 2,300 students who won prizes, only 24 were grade 10 students (one student won first prize).
The national exam for gifted students took place on January 5-6 with 12 subjects, including Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, Literature, History, Geography, English, French, Russian and Chinese.
This year, the Ministry of Education and Training applied new exam regulations. The number of candidates increased, with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City each having more than 200 students, nearly double the number of other provinces, cities and units. The percentage of students winning prizes accounted for 60% of the total number of candidates. Of which, the number of first, second and third prizes did not exceed 60% of the total number of prizes; the number of first prizes did not exceed 5%.
The 10 units with the most first prizes include Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Nghe An, Vinh Phuc, Hai Duong, Bac Giang, Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa and Nam Dinh.
Students who win prizes will be given priority for direct admission to universities and colleges. Candidates who are selected for the International Olympic team (Informatics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Physics) will be exempted from the high school graduation exam.
