The Food Safety Department, Ministry of Health said it has received information about 6 cases of tourists in Ninh Thuan being treated at Cho Ray Hospital for suspected methanol poisoning due to drinking a fruit wine branded KT produced in Tien Giang.
Regarding this issue, the Food Safety Department requested units to urgently treat patients, clarify the cause, strictly handle violations and strengthen measures to prevent alcohol poisoning.
The Department requested the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety to coordinate with the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health to direct the treatment unit to focus all resources on actively treating the patients, not to affect their health and lives. Investigate the patient's eating history, collect test results, and send the hospital's treatment to the Tien Giang Department of Health for coordination.
The Ninh Thuan Provincial Department of Health is investigating the food establishments related to the suspected meals of the patient to provide information and coordinate with the Tien Giang Provincial Department of Health to diagnose the cause of food poisoning.
At the same time, coordinate with local authorities to investigate, detect and strictly handle violations of food safety according to regulations (if any) and publicize the results to promptly warn the community.
Tien Giang Provincial Department of Health coordinates with Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety and Ninh Thuan Provincial Department of Health in diagnosing the cause of food poisoning; coordinates with Tien Giang Provincial Department of Industry and Trade and local authorities to trace the origin, immediately stop the circulation of alcohol products suspected of causing poisoning in the above incident, detect and strictly handle violations of food safety according to regulations (if any).
The Department also requested units to strengthen inspection, examination and supervision of food safety for alcohol production and trading establishments.
Especially small and artisanal wine-making establishments; promptly prevent unsafe wine production and mixing, wine of unknown origin, and wine without labels from circulating on the market.
Strengthen communication and guidance for people to raise awareness and responsibility for ensuring food safety in alcohol production and trading, not abusing alcohol and ensuring safety when choosing and using alcohol.
Absolutely do not use strange animals or plants of unknown species or origin to soak in wine, do not drink wine of unknown origin or without labels sold on the market.
