Ministry of Industry and Trade holds regular press conference

Briefly providing information on the results achieved by the Industry and Trade sector in September and the first 9 months of 2024, Mr. Bui Huy Son - Director of the Department of Planning and Finance, Ministry of Industry and Trade, said: Industrial production in the third quarter of 2024 grew more positively than the previous quarter, the added value of the industry is estimated to increase by 9.59% compared to the third quarter of 2023. In the first 9 months of 2024, the added value of the entire industry is estimated to increase by 8.34% over the same period last year, contributing 2.71 percentage points to the growth rate of the total added value of the entire economy.

In particular, the processing and manufacturing industry is the growth driver of the entire economy with a growth rate of 9.76% (increased by 7.21% in the first quarter; 10.39% in the second quarter; 11.41% in the third quarter), contributing 2.44 percentage points to the total added value growth of the entire economy (GDP in the first 9 months is estimated to increase by 6.82% over the same period last year); the electricity production and distribution industry increased by 11.11%, contributing 0.43 percentage points; the water supply and waste and wastewater treatment industry increased by 9.83%, contributing 0.06 percentage points; the mining industry alone decreased by 7.01%, reducing 0.22 percentage points in the overall growth rate.

Regarding import and export, with the recovery of the world market and increased export orders, our country's import and export activities in the first 9 months of 2024 have improved and achieved positive results.

In the first 9 months, the total preliminary import and export turnover of goods reached 578.47 billion USD, up 16.3% over the same period last year (down 11% over the same period), of which exports increased by 15.4% (down 8.2% over the same period); imports increased by 17.3% (down 13.9% over the same period). The trade balance of goods had a surplus of 20.79 billion USD.

The past 9 months have also shown positive signs in the export activities of the 100% domestic-owned enterprise sector, when the export turnover growth rate of this sector (up 20.7%) was nearly double that of the foreign-invested enterprise sector (up 13.4%). In the first 9 months of 2024, there were 30 items with export turnover of over 1 billion USD, accounting for 92.3% of total export turnover (there were 7 export items of over 10 billion USD, accounting for 66.4%).

Regarding the domestic market, in September 2024, the recovery of domestic consumption and production demand along with the strong growth of tourism has contributed positively to the growth of the trade and service sector. Total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue in September 2024 are estimated to increase by 1.2% over the previous month and by 7.6% over the same period last year. In the first 9 months of 2024, total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue increased by 8.8% over the same period last year, the highest increase since the beginning of the year.

Some localities (mainly key tourism localities) had high retail sales of goods in the first 9 months compared to the same period last year, such as: Quang Ninh increased by 10.4%; Hai Phong increased by 9.3%; Can Tho increased by 7.7%; Da Nang increased by 7.4%; Ho Chi Minh City increased by 7.2%; Hanoi increased by 7.0%.
