Highlanders increasingly prefer unburnt bricks

With many advantages, concrete bricks have been and are the priority of many people in Vo Nhai district in construction works.

Unlike traditional fired red bricks, concrete bricks are made from a mixture of cement, sand, crushed stone and additives, without going through a firing process, so they are environmentally friendly. Previously, this type of brick was mainly used by people in Vo Nhai district to build fences and livestock barns, but now it has been trusted for constructions such as houses, kitchens, factories, etc.

Mr. Nguyen Van Chinh, in Khuon Nguc hamlet, La Hien commune, shared: After many years of living in a dilapidated wooden house, I recently decided to build a new house and chose concrete bricks. Previously, I used this type of brick to build a kitchen and found that it was durable, cool, and of the same quality as traditional fired bricks. Moreover, when using this type of brick, I can buy it right at the production facility near my house, so I save a lot on transportation costs.

Similarly, Mr. Phan Van Viet, in Na Hau hamlet, Nghinh Tuong commune, also chose unburnt bricks to build his house. Mr. Viet said: After consulting the experience of households that have used concrete bricks and being consulted by construction workers, I learned that building with unburnt bricks saves about 1/3 of the amount of cement and the number of bricks compared to red bricks, so my family decided to use this type of brick to build a new house.

Not only Mr. Chinh and Mr. Viet's families, but also many households in Vo Nhai district currently prioritize using concrete bricks for construction projects. Mr. Nguyen Van Bai, a construction contractor in Binh Long commune, said: I have been in the construction industry for more than 10 years. Previously, very few people used unburnt bricks to build houses, but in the past 3 years, the number of projects using this type of brick has increased rapidly. Currently, on average, out of 10 housing projects I have built, 8 use concrete bricks.

Grasping that trend, many unburnt brick production and trading establishments have been established in Vo Nhai district. By the end of 2024, the whole district has 36 unburnt brick production establishments with a total capacity of nearly 13 million bricks/year. Besides, there are 33 establishments specializing in trading this item, fully meeting the construction needs of local people.

The change in people's habit of using unburnt construction materials not only brings economic efficiency but also contributes significantly to environmental protection.

Mr. Nguyen Anh Thong, Head of the Economic, Infrastructure and Urban Department of Vo Nhai district, said: We will continue to coordinate with communes and towns to promote the State's policy on gradually replacing burnt bricks with unburnt materials; mobilize and encourage people to use unburnt bricks instead of traditional burnt bricks; create favorable conditions for unburnt brick production facilities to improve technology, designs, expand scale...
