On March 30, the Ministry of Public Security announced that it had sent a rescue team to Myanmar after the country was hit by a 7.7-magnitude earthquake on March 28 that caused severe damage.
The rescue mission of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam, led by Colonel Nguyen Minh Khuong (Deputy Director of the Fire Prevention and Fighting and Rescue Police Department), includes 26 professional officers and soldiers with experience and skills in handling complex and emergency situations, as well as foreign affairs officers, interpreters and doctors.
The working group prepared the necessary conditions and was ready to depart for the rescue mission in Myanmar.
In addition, the rescue team brought along 2 service dogs and many rescue vehicles and tools. The team is expected to depart at noon today (March 30) from the headquarters of the Ministry of Public Security.
The Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department is actively coordinating with relevant units to organize the development of plans, establish working groups, prepare means and conditions to ensure officers and soldiers are ready to deploy rescue work at the scene.
The Ministry of Public Security’s rescue team is expected to arrive in Myanmar tonight (March 30). For about 10 days, the team will search for people, provide medical treatment, participate in earthquake recovery activities, and other field activities as requested by Myanmar, in accordance with the team’s expertise and capabilities.
Scenes of devastation occurred in many localities in Myanmar after the earthquake.
As of early morning on March 30, Myanmar's military government confirmed that 1,644 people were killed, 3,408 were injured and more than 139 people were still missing in the catastrophic 7.7-magnitude earthquake that devastated many areas in this Southeast Asian country.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale, occurring northwest of Sagaing city (central Myanmar), at a depth of 10km. Just a few minutes later, a strong aftershock of 6.4 on the Richter scale continued to strike the area.
Myanmar lies on the Sagaing fault line, which runs from north to south of the country and is an earthquake-prone area. In the past, the country recorded six earthquakes of magnitude 7 or higher between 1930 and 1956.
