Both Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies and centre-back Dayot Upamecano have been injured while on international duty over the past two weeks.
Davies' case has caused the "gray tiger" coaching staff even more headaches when he suffered a torn ligament, certainly missing the rest of this season (and possibly the early stages of next season).
As for Upamecano, the French centre-back is also expected to be out for several weeks, according to German media. This means Bayern Munich will be without their key defenders for the two matches against Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Bayern Munich's sporting director Max Eberle expressed concern when he said: "There is always a risk of injury after every FIFA international competition, especially important matches. But this incident is particularly serious. We really suffered great losses."
Davies' agent expressed anger at the Canadian team after his client suffered a serious injury.
"It's disappointing. Davies was forced to play against the US in a state of poor fitness after the match against Mexico. I know he's not the type of person who can say 'no' in these situations," the agent said.
In Davies' case, coach Vincent Kompany could use Guerreiro to replace him in the near future. However, the Portuguese full-back is unlikely to be physically fit enough to play the entire next two months.
With Upamecano absent, Bayern Munich still has three central defenders: Kim Min Jae, Hiroki Ito and Eric Dier.
Among them, Kim Min Jae is still racing to recover from injury, while Ito has always been doubted about his quality since joining Bayern Munich. The Japanese defender has only been allowed to play 7 times this season.
