Proactive response
Na Hang district currently has over 1,000 fish cages, with over 100 households raising fish, with a total output of 700 tons/year. Specialty fish farming has helped many households earn a good income. It is currently the rainy season, with erratic weather and temperature changes affecting fish growth, productivity and output. Cage fish farmers have proactively implemented many measures to prevent and combat heavy rain and wind to reduce risks and increase efficiency in farming.
Fish farmers in Na Hang ecological lake check fish cages.
Mr. Phung Xuan Son, Na La village, Son Phu commune (Na Hang) said that his family is currently raising more than 10 cages of specialty fish including catfish, silver carp, and black carp right at the foot of Pac Hau waterfall flowing into Na Hang ecological lake. To minimize damage, right before the storm season, the family checks and reinforces the cage system, replacing old and torn nets. When there is information about storms or hydroelectric dams releasing floodwaters, the family will adjust the depth of the cages to minimize damage. If necessary, move the fish cages to sheltered places with gentle currents to avoid breaking the cages. Furthermore, during the rainy season, the weather changes, the water level fluctuates, and the family's cages are located at the foot of the waterfall, so the fish are susceptible to disease, so it is necessary to pay attention to supplementing food to increase the fish's resistance, regularly cleaning, ensuring a good living environment for the fish, limiting disease... Thanks to that, up to now, all of the family's fish cages have been safely protected.
As one of the households raising fish in cages on the Lo River flowing through Tuyen Quang City, Mr. Le Anh Minh, Group 4, Nong Tien Ward (Tuyen Quang City) said that, taking advantage of the water source of the Lo River, his family has invested in 10 cages for raising catfish. Every time the rainy season comes, the river water rises, a lot of garbage from upstream flows in, getting stuck in the fish cages, so he regularly cleans them up to avoid causing diseases for the fish, buys more ropes and anchors to reinforce the cages and tie the fish cages. The fish cages are carefully anchored with fixed stakes on the shore, when there are bad weather developments, they can be moved to a position closer to the shore, avoiding being swept away when the water flows rapidly.
Minimize damage
According to information from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from now until the end of the year, the weather will change in an extreme direction, with prolonged heat, rain, and storms that are not regular. Therefore, in order to proactively respond to and overcome the consequences of the rainy and stormy season, stabilize and maintain production, the authorities need to pay attention to fully informing the people about the weather forecast, warnings, and forecasts of natural disasters to proactively prevent, avoid, and minimize damage.
Officers of the provincial Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries propagate and instruct cage fish farmers on Lo River on measures to ensure safety during the rainy and stormy season.
Comrade Dao Duy Quy, Head of the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries, said that currently, the province has over 3,097 hectares of aquaculture area, 2,435 fish cages, concentrated in the districts of Na Hang, Chiem Hoa, Ham Yen, Yen Son. To proactively respond and minimize risks for aquaculture households during the rainy and stormy season, before the stormy season, the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries sent an official dispatch to the districts on implementing measures to ensure safety for aquaculture during the rainy and stormy season. In addition, the Department directed professional staff in the districts to coordinate with communes and towns to review ponds and cages at risk of flooding to propagate to people to implement technical measures to ensure safety for aquaculture areas.
The Department of Agriculture recommends that aquaculture households regularly check ponds, lakes, cages, rafts, reinforce nets, anchor systems, safety equipment and take measures to prevent loss of aquatic products. When there is news of storms or tropical depressions that may affect, it is necessary to urgently harvest farmed objects that have reached commercial size, move cages and rafts to sheltered areas with gentle currents. During storms and tropical depressions, it is necessary to reduce or stop feeding fish, when there is heavy rain, discharge surface water; after rain and storms, it is necessary to supplement minerals and digestive enzymes for farmed objects and use biological products for ponds...
With the active propaganda of authorities at all levels, functional sectors and the initiative of the people, it is hoped that the aquaculture area in the province will be protected and developed stably. From there, the damage to the people due to the complicated weather developments will be minimized.
