Due to interaction with cold air, typhoon Koinu decreased three levels to 88 km/h (level 9) this morning, and is forecast to dissipate in the sea northeast of Hainan Island (China).
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that this morning the storm's center was in the sea south of Guangdong province (China), with maximum winds of 88 km/h. The storm is forecast to move slowly westward at a speed of 5 km/h, and by 7am tomorrow it will weaken into a tropical depression northeast of Hainan island.
The reason the storm weakened so quickly was because it interacted with cold air from the North. It is forecasted that tonight, cold air will spread to the Northeast, then to the North Central and some places in the Northwest. The northeast wind inland is strong at level 2-3, coastal areas at level 3-4.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the storm, which is now stronger than 80 km/h, will weaken into a tropical depression today before reaching Hainan Island. Hong Kong's Meteorological Agency said Koinu will retain the strength of a typhoon when it hits Hainan Island and will only weaken into a tropical depression in the Gulf of Tonkin.
Due to the storm's influence, in the next 24 hours, the northwestern area of the East Sea will have strong winds of level 6-7, and near the storm's eye, level 8-9. Waves will be 2-3 m high, and 3-5 m high near the storm's eye. From tomorrow morning, the Gulf of Tonkin will have waves of 2-3 m high.
On October 5, the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control asked coastal provinces from Quang Ninh to Khanh Hoa to monitor the developments of storm Koinu and prepare response means.
Koinu is the fourth storm to enter the East Sea this year. Compared to the same period in many years, after entering the East Sea, storms tend to move north instead of west, passing the Philippines and affecting Vietnam. Before Koinu, storm Sao La in late August and early September also followed a similar path.
The meteorological agency predicts that in October there will be 1-2 storms and tropical depressions affecting mainland Vietnam.
