Parental Pressure Warning

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên06/12/2024

Pressure from parents not only makes teachers feel tired, stressed, lose self-control and inspiration in their work, seriously affecting the quality of education; but also creates a bad image of teachers in the eyes of students, parents and society.

The draft Law on Teachers has just been given its first opinion by the National Assembly at the 8th session of the 15th National Assembly with many new policies to improve teachers' salaries and income. This is a positive sign. However, teachers still have many other concerns, the biggest of which is the pressure from parents.

Within the framework of the study on the lives of teachers in the Southern region, the Institute for Policy Development of Ho Chi Minh City National University (under the University of Economics and Law) conducted research, interviewed 132 educational managers, teachers at all levels and conducted a large-scale survey of 12,505 teachers at all levels on issues related to income, life, pressure... in the three provinces of Binh Thuan, Tay Ninh and Hau Giang in September and October 2024. The results showed that, in addition to income pressure (meeting an average of only 51.87% of the monthly spending needs of teachers' families), teachers are currently under great pressure not from professional work but from parents. The survey results showed that up to 70.21% of teachers said that they were under pressure or very pressure from parents with an average score of 4.4/5 (5 points is very pressure). The survey results also showed that up to 40.63% of teachers had intended to change careers due to mental violence from parents.

In-depth interviews with teachers in the school board, subject group leaders and teachers all agreed that the pressure from parents on teachers is currently an alarming issue in the education sector. Many parents have high expectations, often deeply interfere in teaching, and even put pressure on grades. They constantly monitor, ask questions and request detailed reports on their children's learning situation via Zalo or Facebook groups... More worryingly, some teachers also reported that some parents have seriously offended teachers, such as coming to school to quarrel, or even assaulting teachers when their children are criticized, reminded or do not achieve high scores. Many teachers also face threats or defamation on social networks.

On the other hand, the survey results also showed that up to 94.23% of teachers said that they continued to pursue the profession because of their love for the profession and their students; 91.6% continued to pursue the profession because of their own ideals, considering it a noble profession.

Many educational administrators and teachers interviewed all agreed that in the current context, when the rights of students and parents are promoted, it seems that the rights of teachers are being degraded, especially the right to protect dignity and honor in general and in cyberspace in particular. Many teachers also commented that teaching is very hard work, the income is not enough to cover family life, the most important reason for them to stick with the profession is because it is considered a noble profession. If the image of a noble profession is increasingly degraded, it will be difficult to love the profession, love students and stay in the profession.

Therefore, the content of respecting and protecting human dignity, honor, and body when performing professional activities must be regulated as a separate clause in the Law on Teachers to create a solid and comprehensive legal corridor to protect teachers. In addition, it is necessary to continue to promote the tradition of respecting teachers in the new context, especially the context of the development of social networks and digital transformation.
