That was the directive speech of comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Head of the Central Propaganda Department at the 2024 National Conference of the Vietnam Journalists Association held on the morning of March 18, in Ho Chi Minh City.
Also attending the Conference were comrades: Tran Luu Quang, Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Prime Minister; Nguyen Ho Hai, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.
The conference was chaired by comrades: Le Quoc Minh, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department, President of the Vietnam Journalists Association; Nguyen Duc Loi, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association; Tran Trong Dung, Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association.
Attending the event were more than 500 delegates, including leaders of ministries, departments, branches, and associations at the central and local levels; press management and direction agencies, press management agencies; leaders of press agencies, etc.

At the conference, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association Nguyen Duc Loi informed that in 2023, the Vietnam Journalists Association has implemented synchronously, drastically and effectively in the work of building, consolidating and perfecting the association organization from the central to the grassroots level. The association organization has been increasingly strong in terms of organization, professional expertise, inspection and supervision, and timely protection of the legitimate rights and interests of members and journalists.
Associations at all levels from central to local levels have made efforts to overcome difficulties to successfully complete assigned political tasks. In addition, efforts have been made to consolidate and improve the organizational structure of associations at all levels, especially in press agencies subject to restructuring according to the planning of press management and development...
Over the past year, many levels of the association have had innovative models and methods in emulation movements to carry out political tasks of localities and units.
Speaking at the Conference, Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association Le Quoc Minh said that since its establishment (April 21, 1950), the Vietnam Journalists Association has grown in both quantity and quality. From nearly 300 initial members, the Vietnam Journalists Association has now attracted more than 25,000 members, operating in 63 provincial and municipal Journalists Associations, 21 Inter-Associations and 223 affiliated Associations nationwide. Under the leadership, direction and guidance of the Party and State, together with the support and facilitation of the people, over the years, generations of journalists have always strived to fulfill their responsibilities; building an increasingly strong Association, making worthy contributions to the cause of innovation, construction and protection of the Fatherland.
"In the context of difficulties and common challenges of the world, the region and the country, with unprecedented challenges, the press has always been a vanguard force on all fronts. In particular, the press has effectively propagated the policies and guidelines of the Party and State, always closely associated with and accompanied the cause of national construction and protection; information and propaganda work in the press on the implementation of political tasks, economic, social, cultural, national defense and security issues, etc. has received attention, focus, and depth, creating positive spread. Information on the foreign affairs activities of Party and State leaders has become a highlight in the overall propaganda picture. Propaganda work to protect the Party's ideological foundation and fight against and refute wrong and hostile viewpoints has clearly changed from thinking to content, form and methods of propaganda", comrade Le Quoc Minh commented.
However, press work in 2023 still faces many difficulties and challenges such as: the risk of the press falling behind in the face of the rapid development of social media; there are still a number of press agencies that have not met the requirements and tasks of information and propaganda in the current situation; there are still a number of journalists showing signs of degradation in political ideology, ethics, lifestyle, "self-evolution", "self-transformation", taking advantage of and abusing their profession, giving themselves "power" to threaten and harass organizations and individuals, violating the law, violating professional ethics... causing outrage in public opinion. The situation of reporters and collaborators being prosecuted, temporarily detained, prosecuted, and tried for violating the law, taking advantage of professional activities for personal gain tends to increase, seriously affecting the image, reputation and public trust in the press.
At the Conference, Comrade Le Quoc Minh suggested that delegates focus on objectively assessing the results achieved in 2023 and reviewing the implementation of the goals and tasks set out in the Resolution of the 11th Congress of the Vietnam Journalists Association. In particular, the conference looked directly at the shortcomings and limitations, clearly identified the causes, proposed key tasks and breakthrough solutions to create a strong shift in press activities and the activities of the Vietnam Journalists Association in the coming time. In addition, the conference pointed out the difficulties and challenges from the current practice of press activities and the Association's activities, especially press agencies and Journalists Associations at all levels in implementing the national digital transformation strategy...

The press contributes to strengthening people's trust in the Party and State.
Speaking at the Conference, Comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Head of the Central Propaganda Department, acknowledged and highly appreciated the activities of the Vietnam Journalists Association in recent times. In particular, he emphasized a number of contents such as: The consolidation and improvement of the Vietnam Journalists Association has been given attention, thereby creating unity, solidarity, and strongly promoting the role of the Association; The work of ideological education, improving political awareness for journalists and members has been promoted effectively; The effectiveness of professional work, with the success of the National Press Awards and a series of programs to support high-quality journalism, seminars, talks, training on digital journalism, media technology, etc.
To implement the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress, the Resolution of the 11th Congress of the Vietnam Journalists Association for the 2020-2025 term, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day and to respond to the 12th National Congress of the Vietnam Journalists Association (term 2025-2030), comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia proposed a number of key tasks:
Firstly , continue to thoroughly grasp, deeply understand and effectively implement Directive No. 43-CT/TW dated April 8, 2020 of the Secretariat on strengthening the Party's leadership over the activities of the Vietnam Journalists Association in the new situation; directives, resolutions of the Party, documents of the State on press work, activities of the Association and the Charter of the Vietnam Journalists Association.
Second , the Journalists Association at all levels needs to orient press agencies to closely follow the practical cause of innovation and development of the country, current issues, deeply and vividly reflect the breath and pulse of life to have many quality, objective, authentic press works with high combativeness, profound cultural and humanistic values. Each press work must be a convincing message, affecting both the minds and hearts of the public, thereby orienting public opinion, creating social consensus, contributing to strengthening the people's trust in the Party, the State and the cause of national construction and development.

The Head of the Central Propaganda Department also reminded that it is necessary to promote and drastically innovate and create in journalism, but it is also necessary to have solutions to limit the shortcomings and risks that cause the human and material resources of the journalism industry to be negatively affected by artificial intelligence, digital tools and other advanced technological factors.
Third, it is necessary to urgently develop plans and projects to prepare for organizing activities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day. Closely coordinate with the steering agency, central management agency and local Party committees to synchronously and widely organize activities, creating a broad political movement in press agencies, associations and members.
Fourth, it is necessary to focus on the inspection and supervision of members. To overcome the phenomenon of some levels of associations and press agencies still violating the law and professional ethics of journalists, it is necessary to strictly handle violations. Comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia requested that the Journalists Association at all levels step up propaganda and dissemination work, strengthen inspection and supervision of the implementation of professional ethics regulations of journalists.
Fifth, focus on orienting training and research activities to clarify modern journalism theory with issues of digital journalism, creative journalism, and journalism economic models. Propose and recommend that competent authorities consult and issue correct policies and decisions on journalism activities, aiming for a "professional, humane, modern" journalism, contributing to the role and mission of the press as a sharp tool in ideological work, in communicating the policies of the Party, State and People, and at the same time being an effective means of monitoring and social criticism.
Sixth, effectively and substantially implement the program to support the creation of high-quality press works. In particular, focus on research, exploration, and innovation to continue to maintain and affirm the position of the National Press Awards.
Seventh, comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia requested the Party Central Committee, the Standing Committee, and the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association to urgently lead and direct the implementation of preparations for the 12th Congress of the Vietnam Journalists Association, term 2025-2030.
2024 is a year when the press will overcome difficulties, especially economic difficulties, to fulfill its tasks and find effective solutions for the development of journalism in the digital age. Comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia said that the Party and the State will continue to pay attention to and perfect policies to remove difficulties, create favorable conditions for journalism activities, create a legal corridor and environment for journalists and members to promote their creative potential to produce journalistic works in the direction of positive journalism, solution journalism, and constructive journalism, creating momentum for the development of the content industry, cultural industry, and digital industry, in which press agencies and journalists are the core subjects.
