Sports website Sports Mole predicts that Vietnam will beat Indonesia 2-1 in the second match of Group D, Asian Cup 2023 today.
"The two teams are of equal quality, but coach Philippe Troussier's experience in major tournaments could give Vietnam a slight advantage in this match," Sports Mole wrote in its match review, predicting a 2-1 score for Vietnam.

Coach Troussier has led many teams such as Ivory Coast, Nigeria, South Africa, Burkina Faso, Qatar, Morocco, Japan and now Vietnam. The 69-year-old coach helped Japan win the 2000 Asian Cup, then continued to compete in the next tournament with Qatar. He also took Burkina Faso to the semi-finals of the 1998 African Cup of Nations, their best result at that time.
Coach Shin Tae-yong, 54, has not had experience in many countries like Troussier, when he first worked in Korea and Indonesia. He led Korea to a win over Germany in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup, but the team was still eliminated early. Troussier, meanwhile, led Japan to the round of 16 of the 2002 World Cup, their highest achievement in this arena.
Indian sports site Sportskeeda also predicted that Vietnam would beat Indonesia 2-1, with the comment: "Whichever team loses this match could be eliminated early, so they will have to enter the match cautiously. However, Vietnam has only lost one of the last 12 matches against Indonesia at all levels, so we predict a 2-1 score in favor of Troussier's team."
Leading statistics firm Opta believes that Vietnam has a 45% chance of defeating Indonesia, a 25.4% chance of drawing and a 29.6% chance of losing. Their predictions are based on the strength index of each team, running the results model through a super machine. According to FIFA rankings, Vietnam is ranked 94, 52 places higher than its opponent. If calculated by Elo, Shin's team is also ranked 42 places lower.
Indonesian newspapers are more optimistic about the outcome of the upcoming match, with BolaNet and Bolacom both predicting a 0-0 draw. That result means that the two teams do not have much chance of advancing. Because Japan and Iraq are much stronger in Group D, Vietnam and Indonesia can end the group stage with only one point. That number of points will not be enough to compete for one of the four third-place spots in the round of 16.
