“National courage” is a phrase that has been mentioned quite a lot right after President Donald Trump announced the imposition of a 46% tax on Vietnamese exports to the country. Domestic and foreign experts have commented that this decision is “very regrettable” – it not only directly affects the economic relationship between the two countries, but also raises concerns about the stability of the global supply chain, in which Vietnam is an important link.
Because, in fact, Vietnam always seriously implements its international trade commitments. Regardless of the circumstances, Vietnam is always a reliable partner, consistent in its foreign policy of peace, cooperation and mutual development.
According to experts, the above tax rate was based on information that Vietnam imposed a 90% tax on imported goods from the United States. However, this is a figure that needs to be verified objectively and discussed frankly, transparently and in a spirit of mutual respect.
The Vietnamese government will certainly not stand aside. On the morning of April 3 - just a few hours after the US tariff announcement, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh convened an urgent meeting of the Government Standing Committee with relevant ministries and branches, directing the need to comprehensively assess the impacts, including direct and indirect, both immediate and long-term, both positive and negative, on the economy, trade, employment and market sentiment, and at the same time directing the development of flexible response scenarios. The government also promoted high-level dialogue channels, using bilateral and multilateral mechanisms such as the WTO to protect the country's legitimate interests.
Trade policy is always highly flexible, especially in the United States, where executive decisions can be adjusted by Congress, businesses, and the American public. The announcement of new tariffs is a political statement and negotiation - not necessarily a closed door for Vietnamese goods.
Vietnam's economic history has experienced many shocks, from embargoes, financial crises, natural disasters, epidemics to unexpected policy changes from major partners... Therefore, according to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, this is also an opportunity to affirm the nation's mettle and strength; an opportunity to restructure the economy towards rapid and sustainable development; promote the expansion and diversification of markets, products, and supply chains; promote localization. At the same time, the target of GDP growth in 2025 of 8% or more - the Prime Minister emphasized - remains unchanged!
