(CLO) Nearly two years after the Titan submarine tragedy, the US Coast Guard has released a 20-second audio recording, believed to capture the sound of the explosion that claimed the lives of five people on board.
This is part of an ongoing investigation into the accident that occurred on June 18, 2023, while the ship was en route to the wreck of the Titanic.
The recording was captured by a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) passive recorder, located approximately 900 miles (1,448 kilometers) from the explosion site.
In the clip, which was posted on a defense website last week, listeners can hear a small explosion followed by complete silence, which the US Coast Guard described as a “suspicious acoustic signature” that could be linked to the explosion.

One notable detail in the recording is the exact time of the explosion. According to a note displayed on the screen at the beginning of the clip, the sound was recorded at 9:34 a.m. ET on June 18, 2023, about 90 minutes after Titan dived into the ocean around 8 a.m. off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The ship lost contact with the control center about an hour and 45 minutes after departure.
Rescue teams searched for the passengers for days after the Titan went missing. The US Coast Guard said a Canadian aircraft had detected “underwater noises in the search area,” prompting rescuers to adjust their search range to determine the source of the noise. Four days later, OceanGate, the company responsible for operating the ship, announced that it believed all five people on board were dead.

Victims of the explosion included British billionaire Hamish Harding, OceanGate co-founder and CEO Stockton Rush, French sailor Paul-Henry Nargeolet, and father-son duo Shahzada Dawood and Suleman Dawood.
Subsequent reports revealed that the Titan had been exposed to extreme weather conditions for seven months before the explosion. Notably, the hull had not been inspected by any third party before the fateful dive.
