(CLO) North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally triggered a large explosion during a groundbreaking ceremony for a housing project in Pyongyang, according to North Korean state media on February 18.
The event took place in the Hwasong area, a suburb of the capital Pyongyang, where the North Korean government plans to build 10,000 new apartments. This is part of the country's strategy to develop 50,000 apartments over a five-year period to improve living conditions in Pyongyang.

Footage from the event shows Kim Jong Un standing on a podium surrounded by hundreds of construction workers, grouped together in different coloured hard hats, making for a dramatic scene.
As Mr. Kim spoke, the crowd cheered. Then the North Korean leader turned the ignition switch, causing a huge explosion that sent a huge cloud of dust and smoke rising into the sky.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Kim emphasized that Hwasong will not only be a place to bring happy lives to the people but also become a historical land, a place to affirm the strength of the socialist country of North Korea.
The area has seen many new housing projects spring up in recent years, demonstrating the government's determination to improve infrastructure and the quality of life of the capital's residents.

On the same day, Mr. Kim visited the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun to commemorate his father, the late leader Kim Jong Il, on the occasion of his birthday. February 16, known as the "Day of the Shining Star," is one of the most important holidays in North Korea. This is the first time in four years that Mr. Kim has visited the mausoleum on this occasion.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Mr. Kim pledged to continue the "sacred struggle" for the country's prosperity and security, affirming his leadership role in leading North Korea along the path set by his father and grandfather.
