Arsenal are planning to sign Mikel Merino, the midfielder who won EURO 2024 with Spain. The Gunners were reportedly interested in Merino before the tournament in Germany began and now his reputation is even more impressive.
The 28-year-old has featured in all seven of Spain's games at EURO 2024, but mostly as a substitute. The midfielder scored the winning goal as La Roja beat Germany in the quarter-finals.
Merino has been a consistent performer for Real Sociedad over the last six seasons. The 28-year-old midfielder was previously a teammate of Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard. If he succeeds in signing the Spanish international, Mikel Arteta will have another quality defensive midfielder. Of course, they will face stiff competition from many other "big guys".
In addition to Arsenal, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also interested in the 1996-born player, who is valued at around £20 million.
The Gunners are also expected to discuss a move for Bologna centre-back Riccardo Calafiori this week. The Italy international had a stellar EURO 2024 campaign despite the Azzurri being eliminated in the round of 16. Calafiori also played a major role in helping Bologna qualify for the 2024-25 Champions League.
Arteta is keen to strengthen his defence after finishing second in the Premier League for the second consecutive season, and has identified Calafiori as his top candidate and is trying to push through a permanent deal.
