Argentina issues red alert due to snowstorm

According to a VNA correspondent in Buenos Aires, temperatures in the capital Buenos Aires and northern and central provinces of Argentina dropped to -6 degrees Celsius over the weekend in many places, with snowfall. A yellow warning level due to the drop in temperature has been issued by authorities, along with advice for people to keep warm to ensure their health.

In southern Argentina, the alert level has been raised to red due to heavy snowfall and temperatures dropping below -15 degrees Celsius. In the popular tourist center of El Calafate, Santa Cruz province, the temperature dropped to -8.9 degrees Celsius. Many key highways have been closed due to heavy snowfall, especially along the Andes bordering Chile, in the provinces of Neuquen and Chubut.

Heavy snow is forecast to continue into next week. Authorities are advising people to exercise caution, limit travel, avoid areas with dangerous snowfall, and keep a close eye on and clear snow from roofs.

Argentina's meteorological agency said the cold weather will continue into next week as a cold front from Antarctica strengthens. Winter in Argentina began in mid-June and this is the coldest winter in the South American country since 2007.
