Son Duong Island, for many Ha Tinh people, is always a passionate call, especially when Tet comes and spring comes. And for a young reporter like me, it is also a dream destination, a place for me to perfect my emotions and feelings about the image of soldiers in peacetime.

The sea, the day we went to the island, the fog was thick, that atmosphere made the journey "Ha Tinh Youth with the sea and islands of the homeland" in 2024 organized by the Ha Tinh Provincial Youth Union in coordination with the Provincial Military Command more attractive. I and many members of the delegation had never been to the island, had no idea about the island. Therefore, when the island gradually appeared dark green after the fog, everyone cheered with excitement. In the distance, at the wharf, officers and soldiers were waving, waiting for us. Suddenly, in my heart arose many emotions of gratitude and pride. Who would I meet, how did the officers and soldiers live on the island... so many questions kept piling up along with the waves rumbling under the ship's side.

Stepping onto the island, Phan Van Viet Hoang - a student of K13 Primary Education, Ha Tinh University could not hide his emotion: "I have heard a lot about the life of soldiers on the island, but it is true that "a hundred hearings are not as good as one seeing", just looking at the eyes and shaking hands of the officers and soldiers, I can feel how much hardship and suffering they have, and can deeply absorb their patriotism".

When time turned to noon, when the mist had completely cleared, that was also the time when the songs and voices of Ha Tinh youth rose up between the sea and sky. The cadres and soldiers joined in that sound with their singing, with the rhythm of their clapping, with their passionate looks and perhaps somewhere in their hearts, a little regret began to arise when they knew that this atmosphere would soon disappear... Thinking about that, the corners of my eyes suddenly stung...

But then that feeling quickly passed because there were so many activities waiting. Those were the messages sent from the mainland to the officers and soldiers working on the island through paintings expressing their feelings for the sea and islands, for the soldiers guarding the sea and sky of the homeland; through warm handwritten letters from Ha Tinh students to the soldiers; through gifts such as national flags, red shirts with yellow stars, maps of Vietnam... from the province's youth to the officers and soldiers here. Giving those gifts, the members of the delegation all felt their awareness and responsibility in protecting the sovereignty of the sea, islands and national territory increased many times over...

On the island, I met many people, some with many years of experience working here, some new arrivals, but their eyes always sparkled with love and trust, and in their conversations there was always a persistent will to complete their tasks excellently...

Talking to Captain Pham Chung Anh - the leader of the 12.7 mm Battery - who has been on duty for 5 years on Son Duong Island, I understand more about the hardships and difficulties they have gone through. Those were not only the days of training and guarding but also the long nights missing their parents, wives and children, especially during the holidays. And I always remember Captain Pham Chung Anh's words: "My wife is very resilient"! Just like that, all the hardships and difficulties that soldiers have to go through become light. Only when the Fatherland is at peace can the family be happy. That is the truth that any soldier always remembers to encourage himself and his loved ones.

The trip to Son Duong Island helped us - the young people - gain many profound lessons about love for our homeland, about the responsibility of building and developing the country in the new era...

Around us, the cadres, soldiers and young people were still singing enthusiastically. The heroic marches seemed to blend with the roaring waves, driving away weak emotions. “My life is a military march/ My life is a soldier’s song/ We sing it endlessly through the days/ Soaring over the mountains and forests of the border to the distant islands”. I just sat quietly, absorbing those images, letting my heart experience many emotions. Above where we sat, the national flag fluttered proudly. I firmly believe that, not only me, the young people on this trip have learned many profound lessons about love for the homeland, about the responsibility of building and developing the country in the new era...

One day on the island, the time is not enough for me and the members of the journey to fully understand the life and work of the island soldiers, but each of us brought back to the mainland love and nostalgia. The ship gradually moved away, the waving hands blurred, the island also became a small dot in the middle of the ocean, but we felt that we had really grown up a lot with new will, determination, new aspirations in our own plans... Tet is near but the island soldiers still continue their duty of guarding the sky and sea of ​​the Fatherland. I believe that the feelings we bring to the island today, the feelings sent from the mainland every day will give them more strength to overcome everything, to carry out their noble mission...
