As such, the AirPods 4 will streamline existing models. The new headphones are expected to feature a redesigned design that's a cross between the AirPods and AirPods Pro, with a shorter stem. The fit is also expected to be improved, but it's unclear whether Apple will add silicone ear tips.
The charging case for the AirPods 4 has also been redesigned, with an additional speaker to play a sound when finding the device using the Find My app, and a USB-C charging port will replace the Lightning port. The higher-end version of the AirPods 4 will feature active noise cancellation (ANC), a feature currently only available on the AirPods Pro.
In a software update coming next year, Apple will add hearing aid functionality, allowing AirPods to function as an over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid solution instead of traditional hearing aids. In 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved OTC hearing aid options, paving the way for Apple to market its headphones to people with hearing loss. Apple also plans to offer hearing tests, Gurman said.
The next-generation headphones are expected to launch in September next year alongside new iPhone models. Apple is also planning a new version of the AirPods Max in 2024.
