A beating lab-grown heart created from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells was recently displayed for the world's first time at the World Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.
The 3.3cm diameter "iPS heart" on display was created from iPS cells that differentiated into cardiomyocytes - the cells that generate the heartbeat - and processed into layers of heart muscle. The heart beat on its own in the red culture fluid, although it could not pump blood like a real heart.
This is the work of Professor Emeritus Yoshiki Sawa of Osaka University, Production Director of Pasona at EXPO 2025./.
