The 2018 AFC U-23 Championship marked an unforgettable milestone in the history of Vietnamese youth football. In their third appearance at the tournament, Vietnam U-23, under the guidance of coach Park Hang-seo, brought endless emotions. Quang Hai, Doan Van Hau, goalkeeper Bui Tien Dung… all shone brightly, causing opponents to look at them with different eyes.

AFC reiterated: “From the warmth of the Gulf to the cold winter conditions in China, the 2018 AFC U-23 Championship is the first tournament to be held in East Asia. However, amidst the cold, a new generation of Vietnamese football stars has warmed the hearts of millions of football lovers. The Vietnam U-23, inspired by Nguyen Quang Hai, had a miraculous group stage journey when defeating Australia, drawing with Syria and only losing 1-2 to South Korea.

Facing a hungry Qatar in the semi-finals, U.23 Vietnam still fought hard to defeat their opponents. An excellent journey to the final witnessed by millions of fans. Everyone took to the streets to celebrate that wonderful achievement.

AFC also expressed regret when U.23 Vietnam lost the final in 2018: “More familiar with the snowy conditions in Changzhou, Uzbekistan took the lead in the final thanks to an early header from Rustam Ashumatov. But Quang Hai’s ‘rainbow in the snow’ free kick ignited the fire of U.23 Vietnam. Unfortunately, with the match just seconds away, Andrey Sidorov volleyed from close range to bring glory to the Central Asian representatives.”

Despite finishing second, U.23 Vietnam received a lot of praise from AFC.

Not only mentioning the miracle of 2018, AFC also chose the semi-final match between U.23 Vietnam and Qatar as the highlight of the tournament. Quang Hai with his top performance was also constantly mentioned.

“After drawing 3-3 and defeating Iraq on penalties in the quarter-finals, Vietnam U23s brought more drama in the semi-final against Qatar. Twice the team fell behind but Quang Hai showed extraordinary form with a top double. Surprisingly, it was Quang Hai who missed the first penalty. But his teammates made amends, succeeding in the next 4 rounds to help coach Park Hang-seo's team advance. With many high-class goals, Quang Hai made his name known throughout Asia in 2018,” AFC continued.

Quang Hai brought endless emotions to the 2018 U.23 Asian Cup.

U.23 Vietnam will create a surprise!

U.23 Vietnam will be in Group D of the U.23 Asian Cup with opponents Uzbekistan, Malaysia and Kuwait. Overall, this is not a very difficult group for coach Hoang Anh Tuan and his players. Therefore, AFC believes that U.23 Vietnam will easily pass the group stage and become a big challenge for the teams in the quarterfinals.

AFC commented: “Group D features former champions Uzbekistan, Kuwait, Vietnam and Malaysia. This is a group that promises to be very exciting. U.23 Vietnam has reached the final round after topping Group C of the qualifying round with 7 points. The victories over Guam (6-0) and Yemen (1-0) helped the “Golden Star Warriors” secure an early ticket to the next round. The 2-2 draw with Singapore in the final round did not affect the final result much.

With many national players, including outstanding players such as Nguyen Thai Son and Khuat Van Khang, U.23 Vietnam will be a strong candidate for one of the top two positions in the group. A place in the quarterfinals will not be difficult for them.

Even, U.23 Vietnam can become a formidable opponent no matter which team they face. With careful preparation and many quality players, U.23 Vietnam promises to bring surprises at this year's tournament."

U.23 Vietnam is currently completing the final steps before entering the 2024 U.23 Asia. In the early morning of April 11, Dinh Bac and his teammates also had a "test match" with U.23 Jordan.

The journey of U.23 Vietnam will begin with a match against U.23 Kuwait on April 17. Next will be two opponents that are expected to cause many difficulties for U.23 Vietnam: U.23 Malaysia (April 20) and Uzbekistan (April 23).
