Having just received his first internship after 3 years of diligently submitting CVs, Huy Hoang (25 years old, Hanoi) shared that he went to many interviews but was continuously rejected because of his lack of experience.

He explained that because he graduated during the COVID-19 outbreak, he had no opportunity to do an internship. Therefore, when he graduated, his practical experience was almost zero.

When applying for his current job, the employer also questioned his age. However, from his experience in previous interviews, he calmly presented and convinced them with his advantages.

Hoang believes that age is just a number, and that there are two things that are needed more than anything else when it comes to work: ability and attitude. As an intern, you are learning and improving your ability, so the most important thing is to have a serious and receptive attitude towards your work.

Businesses have many options.

From the perspective of a long-time employee, Ms. Kim Xuan (43 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) said that businesses have the right to consider between the 9x generation and young people born after 2000. Because internship is an apprenticeship, if they don't have to change their major, then surely the 9x generation must have some personal problems.

Businesses will also consider the willingness of older interns to learn from younger instructors. "Among the sea of ​​candidates, why don't they choose candidates who are both capable and young so they don't have to worry about the above problem? If you can answer this question in your CV or during the interview, you will have the same opportunity as other candidates," said Ms. Xuan.

Ms. Le Hong Tham (31 years old, CEO of Real Up Agency in Hanoi) said that screening internship applications beyond the recruitment age is common, not rare. Each employer or business will always have a set of criteria for the profile of the candidate they want to recruit. Therefore, not only being over the age, but also being in the wrong major, wrong gender, etc. can also lead to rejection from the application round.

According to her, most interns come to learn the job, are recruited and trained by the company to select future personnel. At the same time, this position only has allowances but no salary, so for internship applications over 25 years old, she has to discuss in depth to find out the motivation, analyze the risks and pressures for the candidates.

"Factors such as quick-wittedness, eagerness to learn, hard-working and having the ability to develop into a capable employee in the near future are what candidates need to have when applying for an internship position," Ms. Tham shared.
