Scalp psoriasis causes temporary hair loss. Hair will grow back after psoriasis symptoms improve. Patients should limit scratching, scratching or strong impact on the scalp as well as other skin areas to avoid psoriasis flare-ups.

The following methods can help reduce hair loss in psoriasis patients, according to Dr. Tu.

To treat scalp psoriasis, it is necessary to gently exfoliate and remove the scales, using gentle manipulation to limit hair loss.

Avoid removing the scales directly.

Picking off the scales can damage the skin and make symptoms worse.

Treatment compliance

To ensure effective treatment, adhere to applying the medication on the scalp and use a specialized shampoo for treating scalp psoriasis.

Trim and file nails

Psoriasis can cause itching, short and smooth nails help limit strong scratching which can damage the scalp and cause hair loss.

Use shampoos alternately

Dry scalp and hair can cause hair to break and fall out. You can alternate shampoos every day, one day using a medicated shampoo for psoriasis, the next day using a gentle, non-medicated shampoo to limit dry skin.

Use conditioner after every shampoo

Conditioner helps moisturize the scalp, reducing the pharmaceutical smell in medicated shampoos.

Let hair dry naturally

Blow drying can dry out your hair and scalp even more.

Test hair care products before use

People with psoriasis can still dye, straighten, and curl their hair. However, some of these medications can irritate the scalp.

Before using on the entire hair, apply a small amount of the product to the scalp and monitor for a while. After a few hours, if the scalp feels irritated and uncomfortable, it is advisable to switch to a milder product. Note, test a small amount for all products you intend to use.

In addition, the scalp is quite thick, so the treatment often needs to be stronger than the ones used for other areas. If the effect of the medicine is too strong or uncomfortable, tell your doctor so that you can switch to a more suitable type.

Hair loss can occur due to many causes other than scalp psoriasis. Therefore, after a period of treatment, if hair loss does not improve, the patient should inform the doctor to screen for other causes of hair loss.
