In an interview with VNA reporters in Beijing on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and China (January 18, 1950 - January 18, 2025) and the "Vietnam-China Humanitarian Exchange Year," journalist Kieu Quan, an expert on Vietnam at China Central Radio and Television (CMG), said that over the past 75 years, the relationship between the two countries has gone through a challenging history, becoming increasingly close and deep, constantly consolidated and reaching new heights.

According to expert Kieu Quan, on January 18, 1950, the two countries officially established diplomatic relations. China also became the first country to recognize and establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam, opening a new page for the traditional friendship between the people and bilateral cooperation.

Over the past 75 years, friendship has been the mainstay of Vietnam-China relations. The two countries' predecessors, such as President Ho Chi Minh and Chairman Mao Zedong, have built and worked hard to nurture this friendship.

At the end of the last century and the beginning of this century, the two countries identified the 16-word motto of "friendly neighbors, comprehensive cooperation, long-term stability, and looking toward the future" and the spirit of "4 goods": "good neighbors, good friends, good comrades, and good partners."

In 2008, after the two sides agreed to establish a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, cooperation in various fields has achieved positive and comprehensive progress.

Entering the new era, the Vietnam-China relationship has continuously expanded and deepened. In 2023, in order to inherit and honor the traditional friendship of "being both comrades and brothers", continue to deepen and upgrade the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, the leaders of the two countries have identified the "6 more" direction of bilateral relations in the new situation, including higher political trust; more substantive defense-security cooperation; deeper substantive cooperation; a more solid social foundation, closer multilateral coordination and better control and resolution of disagreements. The leaders of the two countries agreed to build a Vietnam-China Community of Shared Future of strategic significance, adding strong momentum to opening a new and better phase in bilateral relations.

Vietnam-China relations have gone through a challenging 75-year history, becoming increasingly close and deep, constantly being consolidated and reaching new heights. Especially in recent years, despite the unpredictable changes in the international situation, the relationship between the two countries has consistently moved forward in the right direction, continuously achieving new results. This is mainly thanks to the strategic vision and wise guidance of the supreme leaders of the two Parties and two countries.

Journalist Kieu Quan also emphasized that Vietnam and China have similar social systems, shared ideals and concepts. Over the years, the top leaders of the two parties and countries have made many mutual visits. This is the greatest advantage and the most important political guarantee in developing Vietnam-China relations.

Not only does it fully demonstrate the high and special level of Vietnam-China relations, but it also benefits both sides in exchanging and learning from each other's experience in Party and State management, enhancing political trust, and promoting the continuous expansion and deepening of bilateral relations in the new era.

In developing cooperative relations, Party exchanges also play a special role and advantage. In February 2025, the Communist Party of Vietnam will celebrate the 95th anniversary of its founding. Since that milestone 95 years ago, the friendly exchanges between the Communist Parties of Vietnam and China have also gone through 95 years of history. The two Parties have supported each other and strived together in the process of gaining independence and national liberation of each side, consulting and learning from each other in the cause of reform, opening up and innovation of each side.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, especially since 2012, Party exchanges have always been the cornerstone of Vietnam-China relations, playing a key role in promoting the relationship between the two Parties and the two countries to go steadily and far.

Mr. Kieu Quan affirmed that Vietnam and China are connected by mountains and rivers, and have close cultures. Exchanges and mutual understanding between the people of the two countries are also constantly being strengthened. Currently, people of the two countries are traveling closely, and people-to-people exchanges in the fields of culture, sports, tourism, arts, etc. are rich and diverse; activities such as the Vietnam-China People's Forum, the Vietnam-China Youth Festival, etc., have played an active role in promoting mutual understanding between the people.

In addition, China's "Four Great Classical Novels" are widely circulated in Vietnam, and many Chinese TV dramas are broadcast in Vietnam. Tens of thousands of Vietnamese students are studying in China, and the number of Chinese students studying in Vietnam is also increasing steadily. These exchange activities not only increase understanding between the people of the two countries, but also create a broad and solid foundation for cooperation in various fields.

Expert Kieu Quan cited data from the Vietnam National Tourism Administration, saying that in 2024, the number of domestic Chinese tourists traveling to Vietnam will reach 3.7 million, an increase of 214.4% compared to 2023.

Experts expressed confidence that in the future, the number of Chinese tourists to Vietnam will continue to grow at a fairly rapid rate. In addition, along with the rapid development of cross-border tourism cooperation between Vietnam and China, the number of Vietnamese tourists traveling to China has also increased significantly. Cross-border tourism cooperation has a bright future.

Currently, bilateral cooperation in projects such as the standard gauge railway lines including Lao Cai-Hanoi-Hai Phong, Lang Son-Hanoi and Mong Cai-Ha Long-Hanoi, etc. is being steadily promoted. This is just a part of the key cooperation connection in the program to accelerate the connection of transport infrastructure, especially railways and roads, as well as the connection of the "Belt and Road" and "Two Corridors, One Belt" Initiatives between Vietnam and China. It is expected that in the coming time, practical cooperation in the field of transport infrastructure will certainly achieve greater results.

According to journalist Kieu Quan, economic and trade cooperation has always been a highlight of Vietnam-China cooperation, and is also an important driving force to push the relationship between the two countries forward. Currently, China is Vietnam's largest trading partner, Vietnam is China's largest trading partner in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China's fourth largest trading partner globally, with two-way trade turnover exceeding 200 billion USD for many consecutive years.

Along with that, the connectivity strategy between the two countries is constantly developing and strengthening, the complementary advantages between the two countries are constantly being consolidated, and the economic and trade cooperation between China and Vietnam still has more open space. In addition, the potential for cooperation in areas such as electricity, wind energy, solar energy, digital economy, e-commerce, green development, etc., also needs to continue to be exploited.

Expert Kieu Quan also emphasized that China and Vietnam are strategically significant Community of Shared Future. Currently, both countries are aiming for the goal of national modernization and development, thus bringing new historical opportunities for bilateral cooperation. The two countries need to take the opportunity of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the “Vietnam-China Year of Humanitarian Exchange” to continue to upgrade and enhance the quality of practical cooperation in various fields, bringing more benefits to the two countries and their peoples, and actively contributing to peace, stability and development of the region and the world.
