Skipping breakfast, staying up late, using sweeteners, drinking little water, and stress can cause blood sugar levels to rise and become difficult to control.

MSc. Dr. Ha Thi Ngoc Bich, Department of Endocrinology - Diabetes, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that controlling blood sugar is the main goal in treating diabetes, helping to prevent complications. Many diabetics have difficulty stabilizing their blood sugar every day.

Controlling blood sugar is not only based on medication and diet, but also related to exercise, lifestyle habits... According to Dr. Bich, some of the habits below can cause blood sugar to increase higher than normal.

Skipping breakfast increases the risk of type 2 diabetes due to worsening insulin resistance, causing hyperglycemia. Patients should eat breakfast regularly every day and on time, with a nutritious breakfast.

Staying up late or lacking sleep increases the secretion of the hunger hormone (ghrelin) and reduces the secretion of the satiety hormone (leptin), increasing appetite. The habit of snacking or eating late at night can easily increase blood sugar.

Lack of sleep also affects the hormones insulin, cortisol and oxidative stress, affecting blood sugar in diabetics and the risk of insulin resistance in normal people.

Use of sweeteners : The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends against the use of sweeteners for dieting or weight loss. Sweeteners do not provide any health benefits and may increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Drink less water : Dehydration increases the secretion of stress hormones (stress) and insulin resistance, causing high blood sugar. Drinking too little water causes dehydration, which is not good for the kidneys and can also increase blood sugar. Therefore, drinking enough water every day plays an important role in treating diabetes, helping patients have good health and prevent chronic diseases.

Lack of exercise : Daily exercise or physical activity helps reduce blood sugar levels and increases the body's sensitivity to insulin. Conversely, people with diabetes who are less active have higher blood sugar levels than on days when they exercise. Exercising at least 30 minutes a day helps treat the disease better.

Stress, inflammation : When the body is in a state of stress, inflammation, infection, trauma or serious illness, the body easily increases the secretion of insulin-antagonistic hormones, causing blood sugar to increase.

Dr. Bich said that in addition to subjective reasons regarding lifestyle and diet, patients can have increased blood sugar due to ineffective treatment drugs or other factors.

When blood sugar is high and difficult to control, patients should see a doctor for appropriate treatment. Avoid bad habits that can easily affect blood sugar levels.

Doctor Bich recommends that diabetics do not arbitrarily adjust their medication, stop taking medication when blood sugar is stable, treat with unproven methods, do not smoke or drink alcohol.

Patients should limit snacks, starchy foods, should not skip meals, avoid eating a lot of red meat. Choose quality, healthy foods, reduce the amount of starch in the diet, choose to supplement protein from plants or fish, white meat, eat a lot of green vegetables.
