In last year’s rankings, these two schools ranked around 200-300 in the above subjects. Ton Duc Thang University’s Computer Science department was in the 176-200 group last year – the highest position that any Vietnamese university has ever achieved.

Hanoi National University also dropped in Computer Science, from group 601-800 to group 801-1,000. In Engineering, Hanoi University of Science and Technology dropped from group 801-1,000 to 1,001+.

Similarly, in the Life Sciences field, five schools were ranked instead of two as last year.

THE 's World University Rankings by Subject use a variety of data independently surveyed by the organization, combined with the Scopus database (a prestigious data system that publishes abstracts and citations of international publications) and data provided by universities.

In this year's ranking, THE used a set of 18 evaluation criteria, an increase of 5 compared to before, and at the same time adjusted the weight of the criteria, depending on the field. The criteria are divided into 5 groups: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, Industry, and International Outlook.

On September 27, THE announced the results of the 2024 world university rankings. Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University continue to lead the Vietnamese higher education institutions. However, both fell out of the 401-500 group achieved last year, down to 601-800 this year.

Hanoi National University also dropped in rank, from group 1,001-1,200 to group 1,201-1,500. The remaining three universities, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, and Hue University, maintained their positions (group 1,501+).

THE is one of the three most prestigious university ranking organizations in the world, based in the UK. The other two rankings are QS (UK) and CWUR (Shanghai Jiaotong University, China).
