50% of Chinese tourists choose summer travel in Europe

70% of Chinese tourists said Europe is their destination for this summer, more than 50% confirmed they will definitely come.

The European Travel Commission (ETC) said more than 70% of respondents from China surveyed in June said Europe was their favorite long-haul destination this summer. More than 50% said they would definitely visit. 32% of respondents chose domestic travel.

Brazil, Australia, Canada and the US are also the countries with the most tourists wanting to visit Europe this summer. 52% of visitors from Brazil want to visit Europe. 32% of them "have the ability to make their dream come true". 36-38% of visitors from Australia, Canada and the US choose to go to Europe between May and August. The majority of survey respondents are under 50 years old.

Japan is the country with the lowest rate of wanting to travel internationally. 26% of respondents plan to travel outside East Asia, 15% intend to go to Europe.

Tourism products and services also increased by 10% compared to the summer of 2021 and 2022. The three main criteria for choosing a destination for tourists this year include: safety, convenience and price.

Cutting back on shopping is also the top budgeting strategy for most travelers, according to the survey. People plan to cut their shopping expenses by up to 37% when abroad, booking less expensive restaurants and cheaper accommodations. Popular destinations remain popular, despite peak summer crowds, with only 15% of respondents opting for less crowded destinations instead.

"Famous landmarks still play an important role in choosing a destination for long-haul tourists. However, their importance is on par with favorable weather conditions," said ETC.
