US President Donald Trump returns

Days after his convincing victory in the US presidential election, Donald Trump has named his future cabinet at the White House.

There are some notable names on the list of cabinet nominees for the Trump administration’s second term. Notably, politician Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has expressed skepticism about vaccines, has been nominated to be Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), or billionaire Elon Musk has been nominated to co-head the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The changes in the Trump 2.0 administration will have a direct impact on the United States and indirectly on the world.

Mr. Trump's inauguration ceremony at the Capitol in Washington, DC, is scheduled to take place on January 20, 2025. Succeeding Mr. Joe Biden, who is now 82 years old, Mr. Trump, now nearly 80 years old, will become the oldest US President in history when his four-year term ends.

Climate change

Will 2025 be the year that greenhouse gas emissions stop rising steadily worldwide?

Researchers point to signs from China, the world's largest emitter (accounting for 30% of global emissions), suggesting that CO2 emissions from fossil fuels in the world's second most populous country are expected to increase only slightly through 2025.

Global carbon emissions from burning coal, oil and gas could peak in the next few years, predicts Glen Peters of the Global Carbon Project. This carbon pollution is a major cause of increasingly dangerous climate change.

However, even if the peak is reached, countries cannot “relax” and should then rapidly reduce emissions to move towards carbon neutrality, said Ignacio Arróniz Velasco of the E3G research group.

Dense football tournaments

2025 will see a packed football calendar with major international tournaments such as the expanded FIFA Club World Cup, extended Champions League and especially the 2026 World Cup.

All of this is part of a wider trend in football to increase the number of top-level matches – the next World Cup in 2026 will see 16 more nations, resulting in 104 matches instead of the current 64. Saudi Arabia will also be on board as the host of the 2034 World Cup invests more in football, with results that could change how the world’s most popular sport is viewed.

With the fixture list packed, there are concerns about player fatigue from playing so many games. In addition, the controversy surrounding VAR technology will be a hotly debated topic among players, fans and experts.

Kumbh Mela Festival in India

Taking place from January 13 to late February 2015, the Kumbh Mela Festival, one of the world's largest religious festivals, is a major pilgrimage festival in Hinduism with the participation of tens of millions of people practicing the ritual of bathing in rose petals and sacred ash on the banks of India's sacred Ganges River.

Classified as an intangible cultural heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the grand festival called Kumbh Mela takes place every three years.

The festival is held alternately between four holy sites, on the waters of the Ganges and the Indus (Yamuna) rivers, considered among the holiest places in Hinduism.

In 2025, the event will take place in the northern Indian city of Prayagraj. The last time the festival took place there was in 2013, it attracted 120 million people.

The return of two famous music groups

2025 will witness the return of two famous music groups, Oasis (UK) and BTS (Korea).

The return of Oasis - the "bad boys" of Britpop (a popular cultural movement in the UK in the mid-90s of the last century), and BTS - the emerging "male gods" of K-Pop made fans extremely happy, after a period of absence from the stage for various reasons.

Led by Gallagher brothers Liam and Noel, Oasis are back after a 15-year hiatus due to conflict between members. The band behind hits such as “Wonderwall” and “Champagne Supernova” achieved anthemic status in the 1990s.

Oasis will embark on a world tour, starting in the UK and Ireland before heading to North and South America. The tour is highly anticipated and tickets are already sold out on official websites.

Meanwhile, a very different mood is expected in South Korea, where the hugely popular K-pop group BTS has said it will reunite in June after its members complete their mandatory military service, a comeback that millions of fans and a multi-billion dollar industry have been waiting for.

Experts say that the return of BTS to the performing stage and public cultural life could push Korean cultural exports to new heights.
