Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son received the UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCAP on the sidelines of the P4G Summit.

On the morning of April 17, at the National Convention Center, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son received UN Under-Secretary-General and ESCAP Executive Secretary Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana on the occasion of her visit to Vietnam to attend the 4th Summit of the Partnership for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 (P4G).

At the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that Vietnam always strongly supports multilateralism and the central role of the United Nations in promoting cooperation and responding to global challenges.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs highly appreciated the role of ESCAP in implementing major orientations of the United Nations in the Asia- Pacific region, promoting cooperation with regional organizations such as ASEAN.

Affirming that Vietnam always proactively participates in and actively contributes to the common efforts to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister affirmed that Vietnam considers sustainable development, together with innovation and people-centeredness, as a consistent policy in the country's development strategy and shared the positive results in the past as well as Vietnam's commitments and goals for the coming time on socio-economic development, contributing to the common efforts of the region and the world in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Sharing about ESCAP's current priorities, Ms. Alisjahbana also said that in the current challenging context, she hopes Vietnam will support the United Nations and ESCAP in promoting multilateralism, consensus, and solidarity to jointly address common challenges, as well as meet the priorities of countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

At the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister and Executive Secretary of ESCAP also discussed changes in the world situation and the Asia-Pacific region, and shared common challenges in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.

The two sides agreed to work together to promote multilateralism, international law and the United Nations Charter, promote regional cooperation, as well as strengthen cooperation in specific priority areas of Vietnam such as application of science and technology, innovation, digital transformation, serving sustainable development, responding to climate change, energy transformation, green transformation, and digital transformation.

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is one of the five regional Economic and Social Commissions under the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

ESCAP was formerly known as the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE) established in 1947, and was renamed ESCAP in 1974.

The ESCAP Executive Secretary, appointed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations for a term of five years, is the head of the ESCAP Secretariat.
