On February 1, the Investigation Police Agency of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province initiated a case and prosecuted five players of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Club to investigate and clarify their gambling behavior. The players were prosecuted under Article 321 of the Penal Code for gambling. The decision to initiate a case and prosecute the defendants was approved by the People's Procuracy of the same level.

According to the initial investigation results, 5 players of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Club, including goalkeeper NSH (30 years old, from Dong Thap), striker PVP (20 years old, from Hai Duong) and 3 midfielders including LBGH (22 years old, from Thanh Hoa), NQH (20 years old, from Dong Nai), TKA (20 years old, from Ben Tre) placed bets on their team's match against Da Nang Club in the 2023 National Cup. After that, this group of players played below their ability, helping Da Nang Club win 3-1.

According to Clause 1, Article 53 of the VFF Disciplinary Regulations (amended and supplemented in 2023), it is clearly stated: Prohibition from participating in football activities for a limited or unlimited period of time for those who are working at football organizations, clubs, and teams; coaches, players, supervisors, and referees who provide information about betting or match-fixing; entice others to participate in betting, match-fixing, or match-fixing.

At the same time, Clause 2, Article 53 of the regulation also mentions: Prohibition from participating in football activities for a limited or unlimited period of time for those who are working at football organizations, clubs, teams, coaches, players, supervisors, referees who participate in betting, match-fixing, betting brokerage, match-fixing, taking advantage of their working positions to directly or indirectly participate in match-fixing, gambling related to football in any form.

VFF also stipulates a minimum fine of 10 million VND for violations of regulations in Clause 1, and a minimum fine of 20 million VND for violations of regulations in Clause 2.

Regarding whether Ba Ria-Vung Tau Club will be punished, head of the VFF Disciplinary Board Vu Xuan Thanh said: "If the incident arises from the behavior of an individual player, the VFF will punish the individual, possibly banning him from playing for a period of time or permanently. If this incident is related to the team, the VFF will punish the club, in addition to the punishment for the individuals. At this time, the VFF Disciplinary Board will wait for the investigation results of the authorities. When it has full information, the VFF will have strict disciplinary action, appropriate for each subject."

After the match ended, the coaching staff of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Club discovered that the group of players showed signs of suspected betting, so they reported it to the club's leadership and the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF).

Regarding the case of 5 players of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Club being prosecuted, VFF Vice President Tran Anh Tu said that VFF has directed VPF Company and the tournament organizing committee to discuss with the leaders of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Club to proactively handle and report in detail about the incident. Related documents will be sent to the VFF's functional department for review and soon announce the decision to handle.
