According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association, coffee export turnover in the first quarter of 2025 is estimated to reach about 2.8 billion USD. If coffee prices remain at the current high level, the whole year of 2025 could set a new record of up to 8 billion USD.

The main reason for the sharp increase in export value is the average price increasing by 73%, from 3,228 USD/ton in the first quarter of 2024 to 5,614 USD/ton in the same period this year.

In the first half of March 2025 alone, the average export price of coffee reached 5,798 USD/ton. With this momentum, the 6,000 USD/ton mark can be completely set in the near future.

In terms of consumption markets, Germany continued to be the largest coffee importer of Vietnam in the first two months of 2025, followed by Italy, Japan, the US and Spain.

Although exports have grown strongly in value, some businesses are facing difficulties because domestic coffee prices are higher than world prices. PETEC Coffee Joint Stock Company in Ho Chi Minh City has had to temporarily suspend its coffee import and export business, waiting for a more favorable market opportunity to return.

According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), Vietnam's coffee market share in Japan's total imports in January 2025 dropped sharply from 41% to 32%. The main reason is that Vietnamese coffee prices are higher than other sources. Meanwhile, Brazil has taken the lead with its market share increasing from 30% to 38.5%.

Statistics from Japan Customs show that in January 2025, the country imported 29,600 tons of coffee, worth 179.3 million USD, with an average price of 6,065 USD/ton - an increase of nearly 69% over the same period last year. Of which, Vietnam exported 9,300 tons to Japan, worth 53.9 million USD. Although the output decreased by 30.6%, the value increased by 43.1%.

World coffee prices today

Coffee prices on the world market fell sharply on both exchanges:

Robusta Coffee (London):

Delivery in May 2025: Up 3 USD/ton, to 5,272 USD/ton.

July 2025 delivery: Up 11 USD/ton, to 5,306 USD/ton.

Arabica Coffee (New York):

May 2025 delivery: Up 5.75 cents/lb, to 385.5 cents/lb.

July 2025 delivery: Up 6.1 cents/lb, to 381.5 cents/lb.

Robusta prices remain under pressure as new supplies from Vietnam are gradually released, along with Brazil preparing for a new harvest. For arabica, prices have eased as concerns about drought in Brazil have eased.

Data from Somar Meteorologia shows that the state of Minas Gerais – the country’s largest arabica growing region – received 114% of its historical average rainfall in the last week of March.

Still, arabica prices did not fall as ICE-monitored coffee inventories fell to a five-week low of just over 771,000 bags. Traders remained focused on the upcoming harvest in Brazil, with groups such as Cooxupe and Marex expecting this year’s output to be similar to 2024.

Last year’s severe drought hit coffee farms hard, causing trees to wither and pushing up global coffee prices. However, many large farms have invested in irrigation systems and are expecting a bumper crop this year.
