Will Bui Vi Hao miss the SEA Games 33?
Vi Hao is the U22 player with the most appearances for the Vietnamese national team recently. At the ASEAN Cup 2024, Vi Hao scored a goal and helped Vietnam win the title. During the FIFA Days training camp in March, Vi Hao came on as a substitute for Quang Hai in the second half of the friendly match against Cambodia, which Vietnam won 2-1.
Upon returning to B.Binh Duong Club, Vi Hao suffered an injury during training in preparation for the match against Phu Dong Ninh Binh Club at Go Dau Stadium in the quarter-finals of the 2024-2025 National Cup. The initial diagnosis was an ankle sprain, requiring only 2-3 weeks of rest for recovery.
"I'm very worried about Hao's injury. I hope it's as minor as possible. As for the worst-case scenario, I don't dare say," said coach Nguyen Cong Manh before Vi Hao went for an MRI scan to get an accurate result. But the MRI results on the morning of March 31 shocked both Vi Hao and the coaching staff of Binh Duong Club because he had torn his ankle ligaments and is expected to take 6-8 months to recover.
Dr. Dang Hieu Hao of B.Binh Duong Club said that some injuries involving torn collateral ligaments in the ankle do not require surgery. However, Vi Hao suffered a torn primary ankle ligament, so surgery was necessary.
Doctor Hieu Hao shared: "This week, Vi Hao will undergo surgery after all the necessary procedures are completed. This injury is similar to a knee ligament injury, so it will take him 6-8 months to recover."
This is bad news for coach Kim Sang Sik. That's because even if Wei Hao recovers within six months, he won't be able to participate in the 2026 U23 Asian Championship qualifiers in September. And even if he recovers after eight months, Wei Hao will still struggle to reach his best physical condition for the SEA Games 33 at the end of the year.
Previously, the left wing of the Vietnam U22 team also suffered a setback when striker Nguyen Dinh Bac had to be sidelined for at least 3 months after breaking his little toe during a training session of the Vietnam U22 team during the FIFA Days in March.
A sigh of relief for Ly Duc.
The Vietnam U22 team remained undefeated in the recent CFA China Team 2025 International U22 Friendly Tournament in China. Across three matches, under interim head coach Dinh Hong Vinh, the Vietnam U22 team conceded only two goals against South Korea U22 and China U22. This demonstrates the team's relatively strong defense.
However, that's not the best defense yet, as it lacks the presence of 22-year-old center-back Pham Ly Duc, who was called up to the Vietnamese national team. Although he didn't play in the friendly match against Cambodia and the final qualifying round match against Laos for the 2027 Asian Cup, Ly Duc has shown that coach Kim Sang Sik will nurture him to become a key player for the Vietnam U22 team at the 33rd SEA Games.
Therefore, the injury Ly Duc suffered in the match where Hoang Anh Gia Lai lost to The Cong - Viettel in the quarter-finals of the 2024-2025 National Cup also caused considerable concern for coach Kim Sang Sik. The 1.82m tall central defender had to be wheeled out after the match. But the MRI results yesterday (March 31st) brought relief to coach Kim Sang Sik, as Ly Duc is expected to recover in about a month.
Injuries to the U22 Vietnam players are causing considerable concern for coach Kim Sang Sik during preparations for the 2026 U23 Asian Cup qualifiers and the 33rd SEA Games. With the V-League 2024-2025 set to resume this weekend, Coach Kim is likely hoping to avoid any further injury news from the U22 Vietnam players.
Although the SEA Games 33 are still far away, coach Kim Sang Sik is unlikely to be happy to see key players of the Vietnam U22 team suffer serious injuries before and after the quarter-finals of the 2024-2025 National Cup last weekend.
