The program "Supporting Valedictorians" aims to honor and award scholarships to new valedictorians entering universities and academies nationwide, who are in difficult circumstances.

In 2023, the Valedictorian Support Program received more than 350 applications from universities and academies; most of them were from disadvantaged families, including poor, near-poor, orphans, ethnic minorities, and the disabled.

After the selection, the organizing committee decided to award the "Supporting Valedictorians in 2023" scholarship to 120 new students who are valedictorians and students with excellent entrance achievements to universities across the country, with difficult circumstances.

Of these, 55 students come from universities in the North (from Quang Tri and above) and 52 students from universities in the South.

Mr. Bui Van Cuong, General Secretary, Head of the National Assembly Office, together with representatives of the Vietnam Young Talent Support Fund and Tien Phong Newspaper, awarded scholarships to valedictorians and excellent students.

Among them, there is Nguyen Minh The (born in 2005, from Bac Lieu, valedictorian of Vietnam Aviation Academy) born into a family with many difficulties and struggles. The lost his father in the 6th grade, all the burden of food, clothing, and money fell on the shoulders of his sick mother. Mother The had to work hard from 4am to sell lottery tickets to collect every penny to pay for her two sons' education.

Understanding his mother's hardship, from a young age, The tried to be independent to help. Since middle school, The took advantage of selling lottery tickets after school hours or on weekends.

As soon as he entered university in Ho Chi Minh City, this new student quickly “put aside” his valedictorian title and found a part-time job to earn some income, partly reducing the burden on his mother in the countryside. Every morning from 6am to 10:30am (4 times a week), The works as a hired hand selling bread for 100,000 VND/time, helping to cover food and rent.

After hours of working, The puts on his backpack and goes to school, continuing his dream of conquering the sky that he has determined with his current major.

Of the 55 students awarded scholarships in the North, 25 are ethnic minorities, including 3 from very small ethnic groups (Chut (Ruc) ethnic group), namely Tran Nu Tra My, Tran Nu Huong May and Cao Thi Lan Hoa - all of whom are valedictorians or top scorers of Quang Binh University.

Mr. Bui Van Cuong, Secretary General, Head of the National Assembly Office shared with excellent new students.

Speaking at the scholarship award ceremony, Mr. Bui Van Cuong, Secretary General and Head of the National Assembly Office congratulated and praised the spirit and determination of the students.

Mr. Cuong said that the Party and State always consider education as the top national policy, determining the development of human resources, especially high-quality human resources, associated with the mechanism of recruiting, using and treating talents.

"We hope that in the coming time, we will continue to have thematic meetings with voters and young people and students, and we ask them, with their youthful enthusiasm and knowledge, to fulfill their role and mission of building the country in the current period of international integration. At the same time, we will pay attention to contributing opinions to the activities of the National Assembly and the country's political and social activities."

Mr. Cuong also expressed his hope that the valedictorians will continue to promote their achievements, always strive to study and practice, and be a lighthouse, a leading bird leading the movement of studying and scientific research in universities and academies.

"You have worked very hard to become valedictorians. That is very admirable and valuable. However, that is just the beginning and during your university studies, you need to continue to make more efforts and strive to continue to affirm the title you have achieved.

That is a very important premise for them to continue to develop in the future. The first step is important, but the next journey is full of difficulties and if we do not try and strive but feel satisfied with the achievements we have achieved, we will fall behind," Mr. Cuong advised.

Mr. Cuong shared that he himself once taught at university and was also a student before that.

“If we actively study and research to equip ourselves with knowledge, skills, and provisions, that is a very good first step towards future growth. Therefore, we need to strive, practice more, and participate in social activities to have soft skills...”, Mr. Cuong said.

In addition to the new valedictorians who overcame difficulties to study well, the organizing committee also awarded 13 scholarships to students who received the "Nurturing Valedictorians" scholarship in previous years and are currently continuing to have good academic achievements.

Each scholarship includes 10 million VND along with many valuable gifts.
