SHIP SUNKS IN SEA AREA ABOUT 4,000 M DEPTH

On the afternoon of October 18, the Border Guard Command of Quang Nam province reported that two local squid fishing boats sank, leaving 15 fishermen dead and missing. Accordingly, by 6 p.m. the same day, authorities had not yet discovered any missing fishermen. However, search forces discovered many fishing tools and items floating on the sea surface around the sunken boat area, such as buoys, barrels, clothes, blankets, etc.

Fishermen in distress receive health care

According to Mr. Luong Van Vien, captain of the QNa-90129 TS (the sunken ship), it is possible that the 12 missing crew members sank with the ship. Because after the tornado caused the ship to tilt and sink very quickly, these fishermen may not have escaped in time and were trapped in the ship's hold. The location of the sunken QNa-90129 TS is several thousand meters deep, so the search team is unable to salvage it.

Speaking to Thanh Nien reporters, Lieutenant Colonel Truong Ba Long, Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the Coast Guard Region 2 Command, said that CSB 8002 has approached fishing boat QNa-90039 TS (the boat that rescued the fishermen of Qna-90129 TS) late on October 17. CSB 8002 will ensure food, accommodation, and medical care for the fishermen, and will have special equipment to preserve the bodies of the deceased fishermen.

"After searching the assigned areas but not finding any trace of the fishermen, CSB 8002 also expanded the search area. The sea area where the fishing boat QNa-90129 TS had an accident is very deep, about 4,000 m, so it is very difficult to approach the sunken ship. In case the fishermen drifted, it would be easy to find, but if they were trapped in the sunken ship's compartment, it would be very difficult," said Lieutenant Colonel Long.

Hoping for a miracle

As the afternoon wore on, the rain became heavier, causing the sky in the coastal commune of Tam Quang (Nui Thanh District, Quang Nam) to quickly darken. Many relatives and neighbors gathered at the families of the missing fishermen to visit and encourage them. Everyone hoped for a miracle from the sea.

Mrs. Bui Thi Ngoc Thuy cried when she heard about her husband.

In the level 4 house, relatives of Mrs. Bui Thi Ngoc Thuy (47 years old, wife of fisherman Dang Thanh Quang) have been on duty all night to encourage her. According to Mrs. Thuy, at around 10:00 on October 17, while she was selling noodles at Tam Quang market, she received a phone call from her sister-in-law informing her that her husband's ship had been sunk by a tornado in the Truong Sa sea area. To verify the information, Mrs. Thuy asked someone to take her to Captain Luong Van Vien's house in Tam Giang commune. And when she heard the information from the captain's wife, she collapsed.

"My husband has been attached to Captain Vien's ship for 13 years. When the Chan Chu storm occurred in 2006, taking the lives of hundreds of fishermen, he was also at sea. Then the ship broke down twice, colliding with cargo ships, and each time he returned safely. I just hope he will escape this time too," Ms. Thuy said in tears.

Visiting each missing fisherman's house to inquire and encourage him, Lieutenant Colonel Tran Van Hoa, Political Commissar of Ky Ha Border Guard Station, said that all levels and sectors are making every effort every minute and every second to search for the 13 missing fishermen. Mr. Ho Quang Buu, Vice Chairman of Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee, said that at the location of the QNa-90129 TS ship in distress, in addition to fishing boats, at 8:00 p.m. on October 17, there was an airplane and a foreign ship participating in the search and rescue.

Maritime announcement to increase vigilance to search for 13 missing fishermen

The Ministry of Transport has just issued Official Dispatch No. 51 requesting the Vietnam Maritime Administration to direct the Maritime Port Authorities, the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center, and the Vietnam Maritime Electronic Information Company Limited to grasp the number of ships currently traveling or planning to travel through the area where the two fishing boats were in distress, and to deploy search operations through AIS, LRIT, Seavision, and Marinetrafic applications to mobilize ships traveling through the distressed area to support the search. In addition, a maritime notice was issued requesting increased vigilance to detect and rescue the 13 missing fishermen.

As Thanh Nien reported, at around 1:00 a.m. on October 17, fishing boat QNa-90927 TS, captained by Mr. Tran Cong Truong (42 years old, residing in Tam Giang commune, Nui Thanh district, Quang Nam), was fishing for squid, operating about 240 nautical miles off the coast of Quy Nhon city and about 135 nautical miles from Song Tu Tay island when it was sunk by a tornado. Fishing boat QNa-91782 TS, operating near the area where the boat sank, rescued 38 fishermen, one fisherman of this boat is missing. In addition, at 7:30 p.m. on October 16, fishing boat QNa-90129 TS, captained by Mr. Luong Van Vien (57 years old, residing in Tam Giang commune), was fishing for squid in the Truong Sa sea area of Vietnam when it was sunk by a tornado.
