On December 23 in Hanoi, the Vietnam Science and Technology Journalists Club announced the voting results of the 10 outstanding Science and Technology events in 2024.
This is the 19th year of the activity organized by the Vietnam Science and Technology Journalists Club, with the participation of reporters and editors following the science and technology field of central and local press agencies.
The fields voted include: Policy mechanism; Applied science and technology; Social sciences and humanities; Honoring scientists.

Agree on policy to restart Ninh Thuan nuclear power project
On November 25, 2024, the 13th Party Central Committee Conference agreed on the policy of restarting the Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Project and continuing to research the Nuclear Power Program in Vietnam.
Promulgating the Strategy for developing Vietnam's semiconductor industry to 2030 and vision to 2050
On September 21, 2024, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed Decision No. 1018/QD-TTg promulgating the Strategy for developing Vietnam's semiconductor industry to 2030 and vision to 2050. The strategy guides the development of Vietnam's semiconductor industry to 2050.
Implement the policy of merging the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Information and Communications
After receiving the direction of the Central Executive Committee on summarizing the implementation of Resolution No. 18-NQ/TW, dated October 25, 2017 of the 12th Party Central Executive Committee "Some issues on continuing to innovate and reorganize the apparatus of the political system to be streamlined and operate effectively and efficiently", on December 6, 2024, the Government issued a plan to guide the reorganization and streamlining of the Government's apparatus, including merging the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Information and Communications.
Announcing the Local Innovation Index
In Resolution No. 10/NQ-CP dated February 3, 2022, the Government assigned the Ministry of Science and Technology to officially deploy the Local Innovation Index (PII) nationwide from 2023. The index aims to provide a realistic, comprehensive picture of the current status of the socio-economic development model based on science, technology and innovation of each locality. On March 12, 2024, the Ministry of Science and Technology announced the Local Innovation Index and, at the same time, announced the 2023 local innovation rankings of 63 provinces/cities.
Institute of Geophysics masters earthquake monitoring and reporting technology
The Institute of Geophysics - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology is the focal point assigned to perform the task of reporting earthquakes and warning tsunamis in Vietnam according to the Government's Regulations. To serve this task, the Institute of Geophysics is currently operating nearly 100 earthquake monitoring stations in the territory and territorial waters of Vietnam. From January 1, 2024 to December 5, 2024, the Center recorded 463 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.4 to 5.0 on the Moment scale in the territory and waters of Vietnam.
Viettel operates the largest data center in Vietnam
In April 2024, the Military Industry-Telecoms Group (Viettel) will put into operation the Viettel Hoa Lac Data Center with a capacity of 30MW, the largest in Vietnam. Viettel deploys the latest technologies to build a green data center.
Techfest 2024 and 10 years of developing Vietnam's creative startup ecosystem
The National Creative Startup Festival 2024 (Techfest 2024) will take place in Hai Phong City from November 26-28, 2024 with the theme "Joining hands to develop Vietnam's creative startup ecosystem". In its 10th edition, Techfest 2024 marked remarkable achievements with nearly 10,000 attendees; gathering more than 1,100 leading speakers and experts, creating opportunities to share knowledge, experience and connect with more than 200 international representatives.
FPT builds artificial intelligence center worth more than 4,300 billion VND
On August 18, 2024, FPT Quy Nhon Joint Venture (under FPT Group) in coordination with the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province officially started the AI Center and Auxiliary Urban Area Project in Quy Nhon City. The project has a scale of more than 93.2 hectares, with a total investment of VND 4,362 billion. The AI Center is identified as a place for research, training, software production, digital transformation support, providing network security solutions, social security, AI serving people, improving productivity, quality, and service value. Also in 2024, FPT cooperated with Nvidia to invest heavily in AI technology.
8,000-year-old prehistoric settlement discovered in Bac Kan
In August 2024, the Vietnam Archaeological Association and the Bac Kan Provincial Museum discovered many traces of prehistoric people at 4 relics in more than 20 caves in 2 communes of Quang Khe and Dong Phuc, Ba Be district (Bac Kan province) after more than 1 month of field work. At Kem Liem cave in Cho Leng village, Quang Khe commune, the survey team discovered a 0.7m thick cultural layer located right on the bedrock and many relics. Based on the overall study of the relics and the sedimentary structure of the cultural stratigraphy, the survey team initially determined that Kem Liem cave is a residential relic of prehistoric people in the early stage of the New Stone Age, dating back about 7,000 - 8,000 years ago.
The first Vietnamese to win the Taiwan (China) international astronomy award
Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Chi Thiem (45 years old, currently working at the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute and Korea University of Science and Technology) won the 2024 World Young Astronomer Lecture Award presented by Central University in Taiwan. He is the first Vietnamese and the fourth person working in Asia to win this award. The award has been held since 2012, for 1-2 scientists under 45 years old, regardless of nationality or ethnicity. The award is nominated, evaluated and selected by an international council of leading scientists in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics.
