This is the 18th year the voting event has been organized by the Vietnam Science and Technology Journalists Club.

Here are 10 notable science and technology events in 2023:

1. The Central Executive Committee of the Party issued a new resolution on developing the Vietnamese intellectual team.

On the basis of summarizing 15 years of implementing Resolution No. 27-NQ/TU, dated August 6, 2008 of the 10th Central Executive Committee "on building a contingent of intellectuals in the period of accelerating industrialization and modernization of the country", the 8th Conference of the 13th Central Executive Committee of the Party issued Resolution No. 45-NQ/TU "on continuing to build and promote the role of the contingent of intellectuals to meet the requirements of rapid and sustainable national development in the new period" (November 24, 2023).

2. Official handover of Hoa Lac High-Tech Park from the Ministry of Science and Technology to the Hanoi People's Committee.

After 25 years of management, construction and development, on November 24, 2023, the Ministry of Science and Technology handed over Hoa Lac High-Tech Park to the management of Hanoi People's Committee.

3. Application of large language models in rare language translation software.

The research team of the Institute of Information Technology (under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) has successfully developed a Vietnamese-centric translation system capable of two-way translation between Vietnamese and resource-poor languages ​​of the Southeast Asian region with quality equivalent to famous commercial products in the world. The system is capable of two-way translation between language pairs including: Vietnamese - Lao, Vietnamese - Khmer, Vietnamese - Thai, Vietnamese - Malaysian and Vietnamese - Indonesian.

4. Successfully reconstructed 3D images of the architecture of Kinh Thien Palace during the early Le Dynasty.

At the end of November 2023, the Institute of Imperial Citadel Studies (under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences) announced the "Research on decoding and successfully reconstructing 3D images of the architecture of Kinh Thien Palace during the early Le Dynasty". The research on decoding the architectural morphology of Kinh Thien Palace, the most important main hall in the Forbidden City of Thang Long during the early Le Dynasty, helps to visualize more clearly and feel more deeply the unique, magnificent and mysterious beauty of the architecture of Kinh Thien Palace during the early Le Dynasty in the ancient Thang Long Imperial Palace, bringing pride in the talent and creative intelligence of our ancestors.

5. Mastering heat-reflective paint technology using domestically produced nano materials.

The Institute of Tropical Technology (under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) has successfully developed solar heat reflective paint technology. The products manufactured by the Institute fully meet the strict technical standards of foreign countries and are equivalent to imported products but have higher economic efficiency and have been applied in civil and defense works (building roofs, oil tanks, fishing boats, etc.).

Representatives of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the Vietnam Science and Technology Journalists Club awarded certificates to representatives of organizations and individuals of 10 outstanding science and technology events in 2023.

6. Vietnam's organ transplants have made their mark as a bright spot in Asian organ transplants.

In 2023, the country had many more successful organ transplants, including some that were considered historic, making Vietnam one of the bright spots in organ transplants in Southeast Asia and Asia.

7. Develop an integrated system to treat alum and saline contaminated water.

The technology for filtering alum and saline water has been jointly researched by the Vietnam - Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST) and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) since 2021. After many testing processes in many different saline and alum-contaminated areas in the Mekong Delta, in September 2023, VKIST optimized and perfected the technology to treat alum and saline water in the Mekong Delta. VKIST leaders said that these water supply systems will be installed in Soc Trang province and other Mekong Delta provinces in 2024.

8. Viettel successfully deployed the world's first 5G base station according to Open RAN standards.

In November 2023, Viettel High-Tech Industries Corporation (under Viettel Group) announced the successful deployment of the first 5G station on the network using ASIC chip technology supporting the Open RAN open standard for Qualcomm's 5G radio equipment. Viettel is the first partner in the world to deploy Qualcomm products into the network with real users, downloading real data. This is a major breakthrough not only in Vietnam but also in the world.

9. 5 Vietnamese scientists in the 2023 rising science star ranking.

Research.com, a prestigious electronic information portal for world scientists, has announced the ranking of the world's outstanding rising stars in science in 2023. Among the 7 scientists working in Vietnam, there are 5 Vietnamese and 2 foreigners, including: Prof. Dr. Tran Xuan Bach (Hanoi Medical University, ranked 2nd in the world); Dr. Tran Nguyen Hai (Duy Tan University, ranked 603), Dr. Thai Hoang Chien (Ton Duc Thang University, ranked 621), Dr. Phung Van Phuc (Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, ranked 762) and Dr. Hoang Nhat Duc (Duy Tan University, ranked 968).

10. National Innovation Center enhances international cooperation in the semiconductor industry.

On October 28, the new operating facility of the National Innovation Center (NIC) was inaugurated and put into operation at Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park (Hanoi). Modern infrastructure and large space will help NIC effectively promote its role as a leading center in the system of innovation centers to support businesses in accessing resources; developing an innovation and startup ecosystem; developing high-quality human resources; operating and developing the Vietnam Innovation Network as well as providing public services to businesses and the community.
